Hey ladies, have just been to the hospital for an information session/tour of the birth pool and to register myself as wanting a waterbirth. Found the session really helpful and interesting, didnt really learn much about it that I didnt already know to be fair, but did find out some stuff about the units policy on waterbirths and their exact procedure so Im all clued up and ready to go now!
First of all we had to watch a video of a waterbirth, which was extremely empowering and came across as being very calm. All the poor men in the room were squirming a bit but it was all over pretty quickly. Then had a talk about the units policy on waterbirth, what is and isnt allowed etc. Basically if I can make it to sunday when I will be 37 weeks then I have the green light for the pool, and can have right up until 42 weeks. Cant see baby coming before sunday, so its all good! Had a run through of pain relief, and basically all we are allowed is gas & air, which I knew anyway, but had my last baby on g&a alone so I know I can cope with that. Can get in the pool as early as I like and stay in it right through labour and delivery if I want. Can also stay in to deliver the placenta, although this would be a natural delivery of it, and if I want the injection to encourage it to come quicker then would need to get out of the pool first.
The room is quite a lot bigger than the normal labour room next door where I had my first baby, so think I could be quite comfortable in there, although they did warn us it can get very hot with the humidity from the water too, so its defo shorts and flip-flops for the OH! 8) My mum came with me as OH stayed at home to put our son to bed. Havent told him yet about his duties for the day, which include using a fish net to scoop any floaters from the pool!!
After having this tour, it has just convinced me even more that this is what I want, and rather than dreading the birth like I did last time, I am quite calm and relaxed about it, and actually cant wait to go into labour now! I must be mad, but bring on the pain!! Well, after sunday anyway....
