...and can't believe how overly medicalised the whole thing is! It seems like the only options are epidural, IV fluids, stirrups and c-section if that doesn't work! What happened to a natural birth?!

yep it's like "you're in pain...want an epidural???"

Yeah I thought that about USA version, epidural seems the norm!! I want to avoid it! X

Tell me about it, I'm delivering in the states and only learnt last week that gas & air isn't available which has freaked me out! Going to pester my MW as to other options but looks like if I want a natural birth I'll have the tub & paracetamol to see me through eek! Best get to hypnobirthing & acupuncture quick!

What channel is this on? I want to watch it! :)

Umm think it's on Channel 4 at 10pm Tuesdays. It is SO different to the UK one! Hasn't made me cry once as it's all so unnatural

I think its on more 4. I tend not to watch it. But I did watch it once and a woman told the mw she didn't want an epidural, and the mw responded with 'would you let the dentist pull a tooth without pain relief?' And the woman replied 'no!' And the mw said 'well this is much worse than having a tooth pulled, so why do it without pain relief?'
So the girl then had an epidural lol.

To be fair, that statement made so much sense to me lol. We take paracetamol for a headache, I'd rather feel a headache than childbirth! X

I was just thinking, do you think they push for the extra stuff because it has to be paid for and not NHS?
I also find its so different in that they get into bed and stay there, where as we are encouraged to walk around, let gravity help etc. Also my hospital very big on skin to skin quickly and not taking baby away unless something wrong, but in USA they take them to clean and wrap up before giving baby to mammy.
Just thought aswell, the girl was screaming that she needed to push but they were like no wait let me set out my big set of tools! Mw here just catch it lol!

Yup that statement got me thinking aswell lol we take painkillers for everything else...why is it so bad to do so when in labour?! The most painful thing of all!!!

When it comes to it, if the pain is that bad then yes i want drugs and what ever else is on offer... if it's not that bad and i think i can deal with it then i wont.. simple! :D

Ps, yes it's on more4 at 10pm and more4+1 at 11pm on tuesdays lol

buggy82, why is gas and air not available ? (sorry I'm very nosey I know.lol ) I've given birth 5 times using only gas and air no other drugs at all xx

I watched it last night and was really surprised that the women seem to lay down and stay there rather than walking around. I also felt it was very clinical and they seemed to only allow one way to give birth, lay down, epidural, stirrups, push xxx

I really don't want an epidural when I give birth. My mum had one with me and the needle snapped in her back and it didn't even work, so it's a big no no for me xx

i think too many people are quick to want an epidural for no pain,

Katey from what I've read it's because it's cheaper, the medical companies want the hospitals to use more expensive drugs that the insurance companies will pay for.
On the other hand medical staff are so scared of being sued if something goes wrong an epidural is seen as the safest option, and from what ive seen people take medication for the slightest thing here it's the norm!

Thanks buggy , Is a home birth completely out of the question then? if not maybe you could find alike minded mw and maybe a doula as well. I would be terrified in your shoes how awful, I do hope you find a way around the money grappers and have the birth you would like. all the best xx
