I'm trying to teach my kids another language but all I have is Cherokee and it's a bit of a not well known language my son is picking it up really well and runs round poking peoples noses shouting ga-yv-so-ni and shoving things in chloes mouth shouting a-ho-li again and again so I'm well proud of him but is this second language a waste of time? Would I be better learning another language just to teach them?

Well living in Birmingham if I taught him punjabi that would really benefit him it's really used loads but I would have to learn it first lol and I find myself chatting Cherokee to them anyway lol! But I doubt he will wet use it lol! Bells has picked a bit up too and Chloe will as she is older no doubt but I don't want to teach them
Too much they mush it all together lol! Then everyone bar me and them will be confused lol!

gv-ge-yu-hi pronounced guh gay you he - makes it all worth it both my kids just told me this (I love you) can't believe how quick they are picking it up :,)

any 2nd language is good for children. It actually helps them to pick up their 1st language easier. Its called "metalinguistic awareness" if you want to google it :P Welsh language schools consistently get significatly better results than the english schools, even though the kids have to learn to read in 2 languages, 2 different alphabets etc..

Oh ok :) that makes me feel better it's hard in a way tho coz I will chat to them then they chat to daddy and he doesn't understand them lol! I think I'm going to have to educate my husband too :wall2: lol!

I would keep at it hun, I'm half and half with irish, a lot has left me from leaving school, I wish I remembered more to teach Odhrán.. Irish is practically a dead language but lots and lots of people still chose to learn it, I would keep at the cherokee, espec if the little ones are picking it up that quick :) x

My niece is 2 and her mum is slovakian so she speaks both languages. When SIL tells her something in slovakian by brother can ask her what she said and Lil will say it in English to him because she's figured out he can't speak slovakian! I find it amazing!

My son does the same between turkish and english, ill say something to him and he'll look at the person her has to say it too and say it in the language he thinks or knows they understand. He does struggle with asian people though. My sisters boyfriend is kashweri (sp?) so basically looks turkish to my son and he refuses to speak to him in english lol.. We've tryed explaining to him that hes not turkish but my son just goes by the colouring of people I think.

lol noone on this planet understands what glynn is saying, english or welsh i havent a clue! OH works with him sometimes and he says he just smiles and nods

I'm planning on speaking welsh and english to Tomos. If we ever move back to north wales then it will come in handy for him, but not much welsh spoken in Leeds!! My OH doesn't speak welsh so I'm looking forward for Tomos and I to be able to 'gang up' on him!!

Irish, scottish and manx gaelic are meant to be similar, whereas welsh is more similar to cornish and bretton. Never heard any cornish nor bretton though so can't really say. xx

ahhh, Im gonna look for some cornish on youtube tonight and see if we understand it :yay:

 Awww really Tiny? I met Glynn a few years back in Brighton, he was on the carousel doing something for big brothers little brother, I nearly broke my neck getting over to him and couldn't talk  He said "Are you ok???" I was like "YEAAAAAAAAAAH" ***HUG*** I was young  Got a few pics and my daddy laughed at me for the rest of the holiday x

I definately agree with Tiny's answer - any second language is better for your kids than not having one at all, and it'll open gateways for them to learn other languages too :)

Ooooh, didn't know you spoke it! Is my username right then?
