Hi! My hubby is from Uruguay, a Spanish speaking country, and he has Italian ancestry. Iæm from Norway, and we both live in England.

Finding names are sooo difficult!!

He really, really likes Valentino, and has wanted a son with that name for years. The first time he suggested it I laughed as to me it sounded quite stupid, in Norwegian it's quite a "posh" and pompous name. Of the 4.5mill people in my country only 10 people alive have that name..

But hubby really really wants it, and I feel bad to refuse it... We could for instance have two names, Valentino as one and then a name that is a bit more normal or accepted in Norway as a second name, and then our boy can choose when he grows up, or we can even "swap" depending on where we end up living.

Since we live here in England by now, the name also needs to work in English, so I would love to get some input from you guys on how the name is here? I'm guessing it will be a bit more acceptable than in Norwegian as this country is more multicultural?

I'm very curious to hear what the first impressions of that name is to people here!

Also.. he found out today that one of his friends in Uruguay who's also having a baby in February is going to call her son Romeo..

And his other even better friend who's due date is about a week after mine, in February as well, doesn't mind the name Valentino, and it's on the top of his wives list of names.. so hubby's worried that if we don't give it to our son now we won't even have the option if we get another son in the future :p I don't feel too comfortable about the name, but it's sooo hard to refuse it as you can tell it's a name he's wanted to name his child for so long.. :(

Help!!

IN SHORT: Do you think Valentino is a good name or a bad name for a baby boy, and also, why?

Thanks!!

I like it, but then I'm a Valentino Rossi fan :). Friends of ours who are both English gave their son Valentino as a middle name, plus there's also the chef Valentine Warner so it's not that unusual here really xxxxxxxxx

Cool! I'll keep that in mind.. :p That's what he says too.. That that's what/who people will associate it with. I have to admit that I personally had never heard of him though!! (One of our sons surnames will actually be Rossi... Overkill?? :p)

No not overkill......but I think you need a good strong Norwegian name too :). I'm descended from the ancient Kings of Norway, back to the gods Odin, Frey and Thor so for me a good strong name would be a must :) xxxxxxxxx

my oh is italian and we loved valentino for a boy!!!!

I like it, i don't know anybody called it but that's why I like it very cute I think xxx

I will be honest..

I am not overall keen on that name.. I can't really give you a good enough reason as to why though.. Just my own personal taste!

Don't let me put you off though!

xx

Not for me, sorry hun but if you like it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks x

I like it, it wouldn't go with my surname, so as long as it all sounds ok keep it in mind. Like the great and beautiful Valentino Rossi

:) Thanks! Good to know it's not as impossible here as in Norway! :p I don't mind the name itself, it just comes with some heavy connotations/associations where I'm from...

But as a friend told me yesterday when I talked to her about it.. if our son looks anything like his father, quite italian looking) then people won't react too much to the name as it "fits" with the looks. It would be very different if he comes out fair skinned with green eyes and red hair! So I guess we'll have to wait and see until he's born.. but that we can keep it as an alternative, at least for a second name..... we'll see...

i like it! i think valentino and then a norwegian name too

im swedish and my OH is gambian and we picked Noa but as midle name he has both his grandads names, so one very gambian (ansumaneh) and one very swedish (Bengt)

The name is fine don't love it or hate it but if I heard someone who wasn't italian called it I would think he was posh.

Thanks again.
My husband said yesterday that he actually kind of doesn't like the name as much anymore. I don't know if he's just saying it to be nice, if it is because I've told him about all the "negative" connotations it can have in Norwegian and that he's worried about it or what... but he sounded sincere... We have an idea for a name now we think! But I'll make a new thread for that :p :)
