Had my follow up consultation after my HSG today. Was told that both my tubes are blocked, very upset. I've got two options- straight to ivf or have a laparoscopy( not sure if I spelt that right) . I just feel so confused at the minute :( xx

Hi, sorry the news wasn't better, it sucks xx my advice would be to have the lap, it might just unblock one or both tubes and even if it doesn't you'll be ready for IVF. If the blockages are caused by fluid this can prevent an embryo implanting successfully as the fluid is toxic, or like me you might find something else that could hinder IVF - I had an ovary stuck high up to my stomach and it's unlikely it would have been reached for egg collection and I'd never have known until I started IVF. It's all very daunting and I didn't want to bother with the lap and go straight to IVF but I'm so pleased I followed my instinct and went ahead with it as now I know we'll be giving IVF the next chance of success. Do you have another appointment booked to discuss further? Xx

The consultant didn't go into great detail on the blockages, whether it was fluid or not but I googled it and the info just scared the crap out of me STI's, infections etc.. I've never had any pelvic pain or anything so it just made me more confused. We agreed to the lap so I'm waiting for a pre op assessment letter, consultant said we should receive it in about six weeks. I remember my HSG on the screen, I remember seeing the dye go all down my tubes, they looked pretty normal to me, quite thin and straight then a bulge at the end- I just assumed that was my ovary but clearly it's the blockages! Then he scared me even more saying ectopic pregnancy is a greater risk- which scared DH as he doesn't want anything to harm me xxx

ps DH asked if we should keeping trying in the meantime and the consultant said yes!! What's that all about! Xx

It's all very confusing isn't it. There's always a chance of a miracle so keep trying, whilst an hsg is a really good investigation you need a lap to properly see exactly what's going on and perhaps it will be better news. The risk of ectopic really scares me too xx

I'm sure they could do an early scan just to confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus. What was the lap like? Is it key hole surgery ? Xx

Yep they put a camera in your belly button and I have three incisions, left, right and middle where I had stuff done. To be honest the lap itself wasn't so bad, bit sore and tender for a few days and I've struggled to find comfy clothes that don't put pressure on my belly button but for me I underestimated the effect of the general anaesthetic, I'd never had one before and I reacted really badly so that's what has left me feeling crappy all week xx

Hi jasmine, sorry to here about your problems. Can I just ask how did they find out about your tubes, did it show up on a scan?

I had an HSG a couple of weeks ago. The notes to the consultant said there was very little evidence of spillage into the abdomen :( xx

Sorry to sound thick but what is an hsg?

It's where they insert a dye into your uterus and tubes to check for blockages- they then do an X-ray. If there are no blockages the dye should spill out from your tubes into your abdomen cavity, mine didn't :( xx

Oh right. So what is the next step for u? I think I could do with a one of them tests. Convinced I've got problems :(

Have you been to your GP already and had blood tests etc...? I had my 21 day bloods which confirmed I'm ovulating then I had my HSG the month after. Plus DH had to give a sample to his doctors which was all fine. It's good in a way that all that area is fine, it's just that the sperm and egg can't meet because of my tubes. So now I'm on the waiting list for a laparoscopy to examine my tubes in more detail and see if they can be unblocked. Xx

I hope everything works out for u soon. I had pain in lower right side in December. Had blood tests and scan and found a cyst on my ovary which has been left alone as they told me it wont cause me any problems. If no bfp this month I'm going back to request fertility testing :)

Keep trying in the meantime Jasmine because stranger things have happened and indeed you could go for an early scan at 5 weeks when they can see a gestation sac to check its in the right place x x

Thanks everyone I'll feel much better when I have my lap date through xx
