Does anyone have any experience with umbilical granuloma? My LO has one, she's 7 weeks old. The doctors have said about treating it with silver nitrate (starting next week) but when I have googled it a lot of people have said about burns which worries me. I know it needs treating as it keeps weeping. Any advice appreciated xx

My daughter has an umbilical granuloma. At one point it did weep a bit because she played with it, but it healed by itself and is fine. She's 3. I never got it treated and it just looks like an extra piece of skin now. However, if it was constantly weeping, I think I would have got it seen to as it could become an infection risk xx

Thanks Ella. Yes it does keep weeping, I'm cleaning it with cotton wool and warm water several times a day to keep it clean as it weeps a lot xx

My eldest had one and we used the silver nitrate with no issues! She's got a normal belly button now you wouldn't even know!! I do remember hers weeping a lot but cleaning it like you are is what I did :) x x

My now 2 year old had one. 1 treatment of silver nitrate and it was sorted. No issues at all. She's now got a bit of an outie!!

My son had one and after 1 treatment of silver nitrate it was all healed with no issues. He is now coming up to 8 months and has abit of an outie but then again so do I!!

Yep my son had one and we had one treatment of silver nitrate and it cleared up (his skin did stain brown after it around Gus bellybutton which freaked me out but that eventually went) xx

My little girl had one too and it was treated with silver nitrate which did burn her. Luckily she didn't seem to be bothered by it but when I went back to see if she needed a second treatment, the nurse asked if the previous nurse had used Vaseline to protect the skin and I told her that she had used a white cream, not Vaseline...which wouldn't have protected it properly...not happy! So from then on I just bathed it in a salt water solution about 3 times a day and it went away.

So personally, I would try bathing with salt water and then only use silver nitrate if it didn't heal...and make sure we had a competent nurse!
