So had midwife appointment yesterday. Saw a different midwife again but luckily this one was nice, not like the last horrible one.

Anyway, firstly I was told my urine showed up protein & glucocytes (or something) and the nurse checked but she said the levels were not high enough to worry about yet – asked if I had an infection – I don’t think so I said – and to contact GP if I get any symptoms.

Midwife listened to bubs heartbeat which was fine and measurd my tummy and blood pressure which were normal.

I mentioned I had been feeling very tired and having times when I cant breathe properly so she said they would test for anaemia. Then she asked if I’d had bloods taken last Tuesday when I had my Anti-D and GTT – I said no and she said they should have done that and also I should have received a certificate to say I’ve had my Anti-D but I haven’t. Great. Anyway, the results of the GTT came back clear so that’s good.

So I had to have more blood taken. The nurse looked at my right arm and the very prominent vein there but said she'd look at my left arm arm as the right was still very bruisd from last week. She couldn’t find a decent vein in the left however so decided to go for the right after all. Now, the needle really hurt going in and she said sorry but she was having trouble. The next thing I know she’s going ‘Oh no!!’ and calling for the midwife to come in and help her – I look over at my arm (as I always turn away as don’t like seeing the blood coming out) and it’s swelled up like a golf ball and theres blood literally spurting out onto the desk and my leg (and my white shorts). The midwife comes rushing in and gets a gauze and presses down really hard on my arm to make the swelling go down and the bleeding stop and it takes ages.

They were very apologetic and I think quite embarassed but I’m left with an extremely achy arm and a huge horrible purple and black bruise and quite a fear of having blood taken again!!!

Ohhh no sorry to hear this ((hugs)) Not a needle fan at the bets of times so i feel for you xxx

oh that sounds horrible!
They really struggled to take my blood and poked and poked and nothing..

I suggest to take it from the top of your hand, it dont hurt atall and it worked first time for me. I hate having it taken in your arm. Ask and they might do it for you.. plus in my arms i get bad bruises i did only have a small bruise on my hand. xx

thats terrible, sorry to hear uve been having a bad time with midwifes recently..

when my midwife couldnt get my vein up in either arm she told me she wasnt even going to attempt to try because it could end up like yours did.. so i was sent up hospital when i had spare time to get the blood taken by a properly trained person lol who takes blood.. i think she was called an anestist..

think we all forget how the midwifes are not fully trained doctors and dont know as much.. thats why im always worrying x

oh no complete opposite to you! they had to take from my hand as a last resort at 12 week scan and it KILLED! Has a massive bruise! xx

OMG, I felt sick as I read your post, your poor arm, did they explain what they think happened?

Really feel for you, especially having both arms bruised and sore.

Omg, that sounds awful! :( is your arm any better now?

sheesh,

id ask to go to the hospital infuture, (doctors cant refuse, they just need to give u the blood form stating what bloods u need taking, the phlebotomists there are trained to take blood for a living and will do it painlessly, either that or ask for a prescription for emla cream (its like a gel i think n is used on kiddies & babies so they dont feel the pain for it, and then if they do have difficulty it wont hurt as much,

good luck next time hun!!

(i used to be a doctors secretary)

xxx

Like others have said, I felt sick reading your story. Not too good with needles myself, but now onto second pregnancy and Rh- like yourself, so kind of got to get used to it lol.

I have a nasty scar on my arm from a needle that was ripped out just after I gave birth to my son. It was to test my blood. dont know how it happened but it was poor needle skills and infection combined. Some people should not be allowed to draw blood!!! there are always going to be things you are good at and things you arent, some MWs/doctors/nurses should just admit that instead of practising on people that dont deserve it!!!

 aw hun, sorry you had a horrible experience, last thing you needed! xx

I managed to request a phlebotomist to take my blood after a bad experience giving blood (ironically) so now my mw doesn't go near my veins!!

Also, I am Rh- and had the Anti-D but didn't get a certificate or anything, they just wrote it in my notes.

Sorry for making you feel sick JJ! It does make me feel yucky to think about it.
No they really didn't say much apart from sorry and that they wouldn't take from that vein again, something about the bruising but got the impression it was just a balls up really!!

Sorry to make you feel sick! Needles really didn't bother me that much before and I'll prob be ok with them again in time but right now I'm dreading the next time I have to be injected/ have blood taken!
Your story sounds even worse though, what a thing to happen.
