My daughter is 20 months old and has always been very consistent with her weight gain. Over the last two months though she has lost 0.5kg. She eats loads but is a typically active toddler. I'm not especially worried as she lost less this month than last so hopefully going in the right direction, but I think if she loses more next month I will take her to see the HV just to be sure. Just wondering how normal some weight loss is though and at what point it has become of concern?

My 2 year old son has lost a little in reality, lost more in relation to his height. But he's supposedly been "overweight" since around 6 months old. He was on 99.6th centile and is now nearer the 75th. He's under a consultant, so I've not done anything about it - we're seeing him next month. To be honest, I think if they're eating well there isn't much of an issue. They become really active around this age, and all that running around is probably what's causing it.

Weight gain becomes a problem when they jump more than 2 centiles. I'm presuming the reverse would be too? So a loss of >2 centiles? Also should probably take account of their height too as weight and height are usually within 1 centile of each other, e.g. my son's weight was 99.6th, but his height is 75th, so weight coming down to match seems appropriate.

Definitely take her if you're concerned, but it's probably quite normal x

I was gonna ask if she has learnt to do anything new recently - have you changed activities so she regularly attend soft plays or anything cos they are super exercise! My daughter at about the same age learnt to climb so were in soft plays twice per week and she lost a few lbs over a couple of months but she was always bigger anyway.

I don't think she's doing much new. She's still trying to work out how to get her feet off the ground at the same time to jump. She is an amazing eater but on the 50th centile for weight. We're going to add another regular snack into her day and see how she gets on over the next month.

I'll be honest, I don't weigh my toddler regularly and haven't done since he was about 9 months old. I'm guided by his eating habits and if he's having plenty. If you're concerned, try adding more snacks or giving her more calorie dense foods if she won't increase the amount she eats. Full fat dairy is a good idea.

My eldest eats loads but he tends to choose things like fruit and veg. At meals he will always eat his veggies first and then won't always eat all the rest. I had him throwing a tantrum the other day cos I made him pizza and he wanted carrots!
