Saw a horrid midwife today. She got assertive about the flu jab and when i said I had decided not to have it she was quite shirty and got a marker pen and wrote accross the front of my orange book "Has chosen to Decline Flu Vaccine!"

Then after she measured me she yelled when I went to sit up, apparently I do it wrong and should be turning on my side before sitting up. Which is good advice I expect but then she said something and didnt explain.

She said: "Are you getting a toblerone shape down your middle when you are sitting up or when you get up?" and I said "Yes actually I am, I assumed it was the babys shoulders or something" and she said no, it was my ribs have seperated and it's to do with not supporting my back on a sofa and doing 'sit ups' when i get up.

Then she rushed me from the room whilst I was still trying to ask about it.

Does anyone have any information on this? I dont really know what to google for to find out more.......

What a cow! I'd complain! Never heard of this toblerone thing. My midwife saw me sit up today and didn't say a word!

:eh: I get that too! I always just assumed it was the position of baby. I will ask my midwife when I see her tomorrow for my 40 week appt (was due Sunday) and let you know what she says

The lady in the bed next to me when I had Kynon had this and it was something to do with lifting her 2 year old all the time, something had happened to her tummy muscles coming apart and she was going to see a physio as the pyramid shape was really obvious after giving birth. Might not be the same as you though but your midwife sounded horrible and should have explained more to you. Sorry I don't really know much more than that though as I'd not heard of it before either.

this happens me and I always thought it was just that the baby was lying right in the middle.
But, my cousin had a problem after birth....if she lies down flat, you could basically fit your fist into her stomach its that hollow. Shes gettting physio for it.
Must ask my midwife at my next appointment!

Just found this online, sounds a bit worrying but I have always sat up in front of my midwife and she has never commented, will post tomorrow when I have seen her

Im sure it is nothing for us to worry about

Oh my! Yes that's it! She definitely used the term: Abdominal Seperation.

And I'm pretty sure it's what is causing the pain around my ribs and that it's getting worse!

Very glad it's not just me. I guess no more yoga for me, and I definitely wont do crunches to get my tummy back in shape after birth having read this!!

I genuinely thought it was the baby on his side, but it isnt at all! How awful.

I know, sounds horrible - but at least its nothing bad for babes ( apart from havind a mummy with a triangle tummy!!!! Lol!)

I got told off by the mw for sitting up incorrectly too! My physio said I had some coning but it wasn't to bad and there were things I could do. She said I needed to pull the base muscle layer in not constantly just when sitting down or turning over in bed and said it should be like pulling your belly button in. Obviously we can't do anything strenuous but mine seems a bit better doing that. My physio did suggest doing it while doing pelvic floor exercises but I tend to do one or the other x

Ah, would these be working the 'core muscles' my mum keeps going on about?

Mine separated with DS1, it never went back I have a 4cm gap in my lower abdomen even when I'm not pregnant. I'm to blame though never did any exercises after my c section. She should have explained instead of being bossy for bossys sake.

I guess they would be but they weren't specifically mentioned so I can't be sure. I don't remember half the time but I can see some improvement x

This sounds like its extremely common... but seems to be something rarely talked or advised about

Omg I have never heard of this
I don't think I have it :oooo:
Thanks for sharing star x

I have this.. Had it with the girls too.. they should really provide info!
What a horrid mw :(

lol my tummy goes like this too when i sit up - I assumed it was baby's back - oh well he's survived this long with my doing it so can't be too bad.

Hi girls

Just got back from the midwife and she was very reassuring about this. She basically said that you would have to be actively doing sit ups regularly to actually cause the damage. The muscle does seperate and stretch due to the extra space required in there! She said we mat notice it more after baby is born but it is really nothing to worry about.

She was appalled by the way your midwife spoke to you and said although it is better to roll onto your side before sitting up this is not always practical - especially in the bath!
