They were just saying on gmtv that they are discussing the possibility of making women pay for epidurals in labour  ! Most stress this is only on the agenda by no means what they are going to do as yet!

i couldnt believe what i was hearing. if i hadnt had one then i would have ended up with a c section as i wasnt dilating and they needed to up my hormone drip but i was already having constant contractions and they wanted to make them stronger  i had been really determined to go wtih just gas and air but when my midwife said i really should have an epidural as i was starting to panic and couldnt cope anymore (been in labour for 15 hrs by then) it wasnt even a choice its just what i knew it was right.

if they did make us pay then men should have to pay for anesthetic during the snip!!

You're right I am fuming!!!

How much would one be? Did they say?

No they only said it was something that was being proposed and and would be on the agenda of some meeting! bet it was a blokes idea

Having said that i would still pay! worth every penny but i still should have the right to pain relief in labour without charge. its bl**dy draconian to say that you can only have pain releif if you can afford it!

Sorry for raising your bloodoressure too Urchin!

men shouldn't be allowed anaesthetic for the snip - suffer!!!

I'm glad we've got BBC on (very nice Alan Sugar interview  ) - I'd be shouting at the tv

Yeah I was watching it and all I can say is what a load of Bollocks.

Must be a blokes idea as they obviulsy have NO IDEA what women have to sometimes endure to give birth

GRRRRRR

i'll pop sir alan on instead then Tracy! alex prefers mtv though so i might stick that on :D

Hi

ive heard that too although i wouldnt of had one during labour if it werent for me not going the last half cm and having a section.
But they should never cost anything what if you couldnt afford it, then you have to suffer soo unfair.
If it happens all us women might have to start a rally.

I read about this after a discussion with my HV. She was saying that MW's offer epidurals too soon before the woman has had a chance to see if she is able to cope with the pain leading to more interventions etc. She believes that unless there is a medical reason for it then women should be encouraged to go as far as they can before being offered an epidural, and to be encouraged to move around etc. She wasn't sying that no-one should be given one, and that it is an individual choice. The proposed rate has been about £500 but I can't see it coming in as it will be too difficult to judge. I can imagine they'll be having a cash machine in the labour room to help us pay for them, with the usual £1.50 charge!!

i agree that women should be encouraged to try to go without for as long as poss - for a start there is evidence that an epidural too early will really slow down labour. but i dont think many women have a needle stuck in their spine for the hell of it

Beanie i love the idea of the cash machine! can picture myself screaming for an epidural next time and someone saying ' certainly madam, wil that be cash, cheque or card?'

I saw that too!!! they said a private clinic would charge around £500  That is just insane and unfair, they did also say though that it will not ever come in to effect!!!! Well not on NHS births anyway, maybe private

oh well hopefully will never happen then Natalie :)

lets hope not!

surely you have a right to what pain relief you want they dont operate on people and say oh if it hurts let us know and then we'll offer you something. I understand how some midwifes offer them too soon. I hadnt even started contracting and my MW said as they had to use the syntocin drip it was a more painful labour and she recommend i have an epdural which i didnt want so i opted to wait and as it was had a shot of pethidine and gas and air i never needed anything else and had to have a ventouse delivery and episiotmy!! but all MW are different as when they changed shifts the next one went thru the options and supported my choice!
