I know im early to start thinking about this but i just wondered about when others started taking their maternity leave? Also if they planned to go back etc?

I've got bloody ages as im only 14 weeks but im so fed up with work i could quite happy stop now. I would like to think i would be able to work right up until my due date to help financially but then this place is stressing me out!! :wall2:

Also I feel like a bit of a wus if i decide to take my leave to early :(

ps. Im an over thinker lol

I felt a bit silly wanting to take my maternity leave so early, cause Ill be taking mine from 29 weeks (as soon as you can basically!) but if you have a reason for it and you feel its right then its fine! Im at uni still so it means I can go home sooner and start getting a house of my own sorted and finish getting everything ready like hospital tours in my area and all that jazz.

My works a big pile of poo, so Im going to be off sick unpaid until my leave begins anyway I think. It you feel its stressing you out then deffinatly dont rule out leaving as soon as you can :)

p.s theres nothing wrong with being an overthinker!! im totally the same :)

i've decided to stay on til 1st of may (i'm due 25th) and i'll be going back after 9/12 months i'm still not sure if i'm going to take the full year!

oh i started thinking about this ages ago! lol. my job is the easiest thing ever but it hurts my head and stresses me out.. i had 4 weeks hols left and then i thought i'd start taking mat leave from the start of the next rota where my due date would be (9th june..) so i worked it out at, and my employer agreed :D from the 16th april - 18th may using my holidays.. and then from the 18th may 2010 to the 19th may 2011! this job doesn't give my SMP though so i'm claiming from JobCentre for Maternity Allowance.. that's one thing you should do! check if your employer gives you SMP xxx

I would love to start now!

Im going to take my maternity leave from my due date, but im saving my holidays, so ill have 4 weeks off before. Planning on taking 9months, cant really afford more than that.

Can't citizens advice get you something in writing? you should be entitled to your holidays for the whole time you are on maternity leave, i dont know this for sure, but i dont see why you wouldnt be. I think you are also enitled to bank holidays in leiu. I would speak to them again, and ask for something in writing. Is there anything about it on the government website? Good luck, hope you sort it out xx

Does this help: -

I'm starting my mat leave on 6th Sep - due on 24th. I'm going to take 9 months - basically as long as I can get paid for, after that I can take another 3 months but I don't get paid and lose my pensions contributions.

I'm a teacher so I get the summer holidays before as well, just have to go back for training day at the start of the new academic year and then I am out of there!

Can't wait.

thanks! i got given that today by citizens advice. but still doesnt say wether u can take ur full holiday entitlement b4 maternity leave. so annoying!
but thanks of thinking of me

Try emailing the Citizens advice people at your local office instead and you'll get a better answer I'm sure.

Depends on ur employer so HR is probably the best place to start, where I work we get an information workshop which I am hoping to go too this month...

I should be starting mat leave 22nd July (baby due 4th August) I'll be taking 6 months mat leave then using my FULL annual leave entitlement after that so I will end up going back end of march (end of annual leave year) then I have the option of taking more anual leave come april or going back and spreading my annual leave throughout the year.

Im playing it by ear and if my doc/midwife thinks I need to leave earlier Ill start mat leave earlier with thier written advice I wont have to give any notice to start. I think Id rather have the time with the little one when he arrives.

You are entitled to all of your employment benefits while you are on maternity leave and that includes acruing your annual leave entitlement. Direct.gov website should have info on your maternity rights. Disadvantaging you because of maternity is legally gender discrimination and there is no limit to the amount of money you can sue an employer for gender discrimination. You could print off some pages from the website an highlight the relevant bits, then hand it to your boss with a letter saying you would like to take all your annual leave before your maternity leave officially starts. :)

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents...amilies/Pregnancyandmaternityrights/DG_175088

here's the web page I was talking about. Its perfectly clear about paid holiday allowance during maternity leave. I'd print it off if I were you and arrange to meet your boss for a discussion about your maternity leave options, take it with you and ask to take your leave when you want it. They dont HAVE to carry over annual leave you dont take during the allocated year so if you're gonna take more than the rest of the annual leave year off make sure you take it all before you start mat leave.

:dust:hi, thanks every1 so much for ur advice, been really help ful. i sent my manager a email yesterday regarding all this and she got back to me saying i can use my full 20 days before. providing i dont hand my notice in when on maternity leave. which is fair enough.
so i am well happy now. i'll be leaving 2nd july using 4 weeks hols then start my maternity 31st july when baby is due
