Ok Mummies, what do TENS machines actually do, have you ever used one and would you rate them?

I'm not quite a mummy yet... but they send little electrical pulses which (being technical) ease the pain. Lol. My OH's mum uses one for her bad knee and she loves it! Except when she turned the voltage up a bit and shocked her leg a little. Lol.

I'm hoping to borrow it when i go into labour - though obviosuly for when i'm not in the water.

Sorry, i'm not much use am I. Lol.

It's like a tingly sensation on your back, I bought one and tried it out the other night (got the elle tens labour one from boots) if you are going to get one get one with a boost button.

Tell you what I only had it on 10 mins and it really helped with my back ache!!

I used one with my first labour, I would highly recommend them. You need to make sure you use it early on in labour to get the full benefits. I ended up using mine until very late on in labour because I had a lot of back pain. It was bliss.

You can often hire them from your hospital which is cheaper than hiring them elsewhere but there's no guarantee that they'll have any available I guess.

I LOVED my tens machine - I ended up just using this and the water from the pool for pain relief - it was FAB. I did give myself huge shocks though by turning it up to 10 when I was mid-contraction and a bit not with it!

I ordered mine online - it arrived at 37 weeks and I had it for 5 weeks (until 42 weeks) if I needed it. I could also extend this time for no extra charge just by phoning them if I had needed to. They were great - wish I could remember where it was from! It was about £22 for the hire.

I think they have to be special labour tens machines so you might want to check this out.

I hired mine from the Mama Tens website. it came last week and you can keep it till 42 wks if you need to.

I also think that they need to be special labour ones (the instructions say that this one has three different settings for the 3 stages of labour). although they must all do the same basic thing!

I love mine....i got through 12 hours of labour on just that an paracetamol :D :D would have one again :D

theyre little electrical impulses that i think block pain signals? i didnt bother with one but my girl friend did and she said it really helped.

they are blimmin brilliant and i would say definately get one!

I used mine for 12 hours at home and then 24 hours in the hospital and didn't use anything else  (until i had an epidural and emergency c section right at the end :rotfl: ). It really does work wonders and i will def use one again.
Best thing was the batteries lasted for the entire time, so didn't even have to stop using it to change the batteries

Elle tens was the one i had - very easy to use too!
