I can't get my head around this, hoping someone can help!
My employer has given me a breakdown of my net pay whilst I am on May leave but are unable to tell me what tax, Ni and pension contributions will be deducted. Does anyone know how to work this out? Just a rough idea would help so I'm not shocked when I do get paid!
Thanks everyone :-)

I dnt recall paying any tax whilst on smp.
NI was like £20 if that and wit my pension i pay 3% per monthly salary of what ever i earn (was FT, but after mat leave im now PT) and my employer match it. So if u pay a particular percentage amount from ur monthly salary try and work by that x

You don't earn enough on SMP to pay tax, and may even get a rebate!

It goes on the whole tax year so say your annual tax free allowance is £10,000 then once u have earned that u start to pay tax. So if since April u have earned over your allowance u will pay tax on smp or the tax may start a few months into your smp. If u have a low salary u wont pay tax x

Depends if you are just on smp or your employer pays you Their maternity rate. I'm getting about £50 a month back In Rebate but only on smp.

Carla81 that's not right. Your allowance is divided in equal parts of tax months or weeks when you're paid. You can earn 882 pm before you would pay tax (threshold is lower for NI) when you drop onto SMP if you've previously been a taxpayer you'll find you don't pay tax and will be refunded a proportion of some of the tax you've paid previously in the tax year. You will still pay NI though on your SMP. As you can see it will depend on your total gross pay to date and how much you're paid when you go on maternity leave.
I'm happy to help you with some calculations if you need. X

I'm currently receiving the minimum rate smp. Im paying about £20 NI and my pension is 6% of my salary. I received a tax rebate this month which offset all the deductions. So I got paid just under £600 for the month.
