I have finally come round to writing my birth story! So, for about 3 weeks my stomach wasn't feeling right and I kept feeling like my waters were about to break. My midwife said it was because my baby is finally trying to turn because she was breech ever since my 20 weeks scan. I had extra scans once or twice a month due to growth and was told she was breech at every one of the scans.
At 0115 on Thursday 6th February at 35+3, I was on my laptop downstairs at my Mum's house. I felt like I needed the toilet but I thought I would wait for a while as I had just been and I thought it was because my baby was leaning on my bladder. At 0255 I decided to go to the toilet and then try and sleep. I was about to pick my laptop up and my waters all broke and went everywhere! I couldn't believe how clear the water was! I had no contractions. I called my Mum who was asleep upstairs as I didn't want to run upstairs with water gushing everywhere. She told me to calm down as I was panicking and that she was coming downstairs. I called my baby’s father, Tom, who I have an on and off relationship with and he came straight round. Whilst he was on his way round I called the labor ward who told me to come in and to also bring my labor bag in. I didn't have a spare pair of leggings so my Mum gave me my sister’s to wear (she hasn't wanted them back ha!).
Tom drove me to the hospital whilst my Mum got ready and came up a while later. I had my urine tested and bloods taken. I had bands around my stomach to monitor my baby. My Mum came in after they had examined me and she was crying. I think she was just very emotional for me. My baby was moving a lot more and I didn't feel right because there was no water inside me. The midwife came back into the room and told me I wasn't going to leave the hospital until I had given birth to my baby. I was gob smacked! I explained that I was worried because I was only 35 weeks and also my baby was breech. They gave me a scan and I saw my baby on the screen. She was still breech. The doctor explained to me I was to have a cesarean section at 0800 the following day. I was scared, but I was reassured everything was going to be okay. I was told my baby would be put in an incubator for a few days just whilst she gets her strength. Another midwife came into the room at 0900, and I was told that I was going to have 2 steroid injections, one now and one 12 hours later. I thought okay, this can’t be that bad, it’s only going to be like another injection! I was wrong, it was the most painful injection I have ever had and I screamed and cried the room down because it hurt that much! My Mum was crying too and Tom was calming me down. By that point I just wanted to go home, but I knew I couldn't. I was moved into a ward where other women were being induced and I was the only one that was having a cesarean.
I was starting to get contractions throughout the day but they weren't anything painful. They felt like mild period pains but didn't bother me. My Mum brought my sister in to see me in the evening and I still had the bands around my stomach. At 2100, I had to have my second steroid injection. I knew I was going to hate it because of the pain I felt earlier on. I was crying beforehand and I asked if I could have it in a different room instead of the ward so other patients didn't hear me crying my eyes out. Tom was with me but my Mum and my sister had gone home by this point to get rest. The midwife said I can refuse it if I really didn't want the injection but I told them to do it because I wanted to do it for my baby. I had it done and I dealt with it.
I fell asleep after Tom went and woke up around 0400. My contractions had gotten stronger but I could still deal with them on Paracetamol. An hour later at around 0500 the midwife came to check on me. I told her I had timed my contractions and that they were getting to a point I couldn't deal with them on just Paracetamol. My contractions were all over the place. They were between every 1 and 7 minutes. She looked concerned as she knew my baby was breech so she went and called a doctor to examine me. I was dilated at 3 cm. He looked concerned and told me he didn't want me to dilate quickly so he said I am going to have a cesarean immediately. I was told to call Tom, who was already downstairs as something made him come in early. Tom put on this blue uniform he had to wear and I was taken up to the theatre. My contractions were every minute by this point and I was told my labor had come on quickly. I had the anesthetic injection into the bottom of my spine, and because I was tensed and panicking it hurt. Tom told me to relax and I relaxed myself. I didn't feel a thing after I relaxed. For some reason the anesthetic made me feel very high. I was giggling a lot and instead of being scared, I suddenly became very interested in everything that was going on. The nurse told me to move onto the bed, I wasn't numb yet. It took 10 minutes for it to kick in. It felt like pins and needles! They did the operation and they had trouble getting my baby’s head out so they had to push down onto my left rib which was the only thing I felt. Before I knew it my beautiful daughter at 0658 was lifted up and shown to me! Tom was crying his eyes out and I had a few tears. I thought I was going to ball my eyes out! Tom cut the cord so it was shorter after they had checked her over. She weighed 4lb 9.5ozs! She was then brought over to me and I had the first cuddles! I gave her a kiss and said ‘hello gorgeous, so you were the one who was inside me!’ She had her eyes open and I turned to Tom and said 'can you hold her because I have wires everywhere', as I was plugged to so many different machines. Our daughter was then taken to special care to be put in an incubator but it wasn't anything major. She had jaundice too. I was standing on my feet 2 hours after the operation but I couldn't walk because of the pain so I had a wheel chair to go and see our daughter.
2 days later my little girl's jaundice had near enough gone so she was allowed with me in a ward! It was tiring waking up and feeding her after being in a room on my own beforehand whilst she was in an incubator, but she was worth me being tired!
After 5 and a half days in hospital we were allowed out! I love Tara-May so much! I found the name Tara off the internet and I immediately fell in love with it! May is my Nan’s middle name, who unfortunately passed away 2 months before I fell pregnant.
I’m sorry that my birth story is so long! I just wanted to get most of the details in so I can look back and remember it! If I wrote everything then it’ll be double what I have wrote already ha! I will also be showing Tara this when she’s older!
I love you lots Tara-May!
