Subchorionic haematoma; ~12 weeks

I had my scan today, and was dated 12+6. Everything looked fine with baby, but towards the end of the scan the sonographer told me there was a small subchorionic haematoma (small bleed) outside of the uterus, above my cervix.

She said it was nothing to worry about (easier said than done!), and that I might experience some spotting, or it might reabsorb, or it might just stay there for the duration of the pregnancy. She didn't seem to worry, but she also didn't offer an explanation or cause, or advice regarding rest/sex etc.

I have a consultant appointment on Tuesday so I'll probably mention it for some piece of mind and to make sure they're aware as I'm already high risk, but has anybody experienced this with no bleeding/spotting?

I'm sure it's absolutely fine but I didn't have anything like this with my last pregnancy so it's on my mind at the moment.

I've had 2 SCH, in 2 separate pregnancies. The reason she wouldn't have told you why is because they really don't have any idea. As it's unethical to experiment on pregnant ladies they generally can only guess and the main theory is that a SCH is damage caused by the implantation of the egg. I think I read some where that a SCH above the baby is a little more risky then a bleed below the baby, but it's all speculation.

I was adviced to keep away from sex, rest when I could, absolutely no heavy lifting - not even shopping bags, and drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. As she said, you may or may not bleed/spot so don't be alarmed if you do. Some women have major bleeds which is what leads to the discovery of SCH. With my first pregnancy I spotted alot after sex which sent me to EPAU. With this pregnancy I haven't spotted at all, it was only discovered at an early reassurance scan. 2 weeks later and its totally reabsorbed.

Hopefully your consultant/specialist will be able to reabosorbe you. But I would guess that if you haven't spotted yet you possibly won't spot at all xx

Thanks for sharing, Baby.3! Sorry you had this twice, but so glad it's now reabsorbed and gave you no troubles this pregnancy

The sonographer didn't say anything about rest or avoiding sex, just that there may be spotting or it may remain/reabsorb, but when I mentioned it to my GP in passing she said don't avoid anything - they're quite common. Hoping it's gone by the next scan which feels yeaaaaars away!

Its funny because your the second person I've spoken too who's medical professional has said to carry on as normal. Yet mine put the fear of God into me (wasn't hard to be honest after my last experience). I think it might be because he was American, I've had a google and most people who have said they where adviced to rest etc where American also. So maybe its common practice over there?

Who knows, either way as you say they are very common and will either just sit there not doing anything or will reasorbe. Hopefully, yours will give you no bother and be gone by the next scan xx

Thanks, Baby.3! It is definitely weird that the advice is so different.. I haven't had any spotting since the scan so I'm hoping I won't have any tbh
