Student midwives: yes or no?

Deffo yes! I had one when I had codie and she was soooo much nicer then the trained midwife, maybe because she was more my age where as the battle ax was a old biddy :)

When I had my booking in appt I was booked in by a student MW...she was however just about qualified and now works in our Antinatal unit and I see her weekly and would love her to deliver this baby.....

But back to the student MW I really have no problem with them being in with me at any stage either antinatal and labour etc etc.... Im not shy etc so that doesnt bother me and i appreciate they have to learn somehow so yeah Im fine with that....xxx

I haven't let a student in on mine since I am being induced and I am going to be bed ridden and alsorts of monitors on me I thought I'd just want the normal doctors and nurses looking after me, worrying enough about this birth as it is now lol.....

And what with it being my first too its twice as scary :S x Got told I might be in for a long stay in hospital lol x

Thats understandable MCrazy.....

I am also being induced or having section not sure yet but its my second so I wont mind if theres a student in with us...I had a student in with DD and was also induced then...just felt a bit more secure having an extra pair of hands there but each to their own ehh.... Not long for you now ehh xx

nopes 9th Feb booked in for 2pm, have no idea whats going to happen or even if my partner can stay with me till I actually give birth :S worrying a tad really ...

Ah wow..... Ahhh dont worry if you have an induction he will be allowed in with you as far as Im aware the only time your alone is if you have a section under general anesthetic but they tend to not do them under generals now so I cant see why they wont let him with you...exciting times for you xx

I have no problems with students being there, like most of you have said they've got to learn some how. Also my OH is a student paramedic but although he's done the job for a year and a half now he is yet to have delivered a baby. I am hoping if all is straight forward with my labour that the midwife will let him deliver him/her while being supervised. I've not discussed this yet with my midwife. Afterall he could end up delivering a baby anyday in his job and there is nothing to say that the more senior paramedic supervising him has any more experience in delivering babies.

For the girls who said they wouldn't like to have a male student , may I ask how you would feel about a male doctor if one was needed ? Is it specifically because they are male , or because they are students ? I just curious ? Not Judging whatsoever :flower:

i had a male student dr in with me and it did not bother me at all he was only there to observe a normal uncomplicated delivery he didnt actually come near me just stood and waited haha i bet the poor man got bored lol

Yeah it wouldnt bother me in the slightest , but I know there are women who would feel uncomfortable .

Hi, personally, I would prefer all women, but if a male doctor was really needed and there wasn't a woman available I wouldn't be in a position to object. I have never had a bloke I wasn't in a relationship with seeing my bits so I suppose I am feeling uncomfortable at the thought, even though i've been far from shy with my boyfriends :) However, a doctor is a fully qualified medical professional who has seen it all before, hundreds of times and has developed a certain ethical code. A male student hasn't too much experience and may not even finish his training, so it would be more like just having some bloke watching! Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine why a male midwife would assume women wouldn't mind. Maybe most don't, I've no idea. It's not for me though.

No it wouldnt bother me at all male of female student or fully qualified and experienced..... Im pretty easy going and I think for me personally the more experience they get the better...xxx

I have asked myself before if I would mind if I had a male midwife. I don't honk it would bother me but I think I would prefer a female, as it is likely that she has gone through labour herself though not always the case. As for a male student, I dot think that would bother me as they would mostly just be observing, I suppose.

Before I was pregnant I had an abnormal smear test and had to see a consultant on two seperate occasions to have abnormal cells biopsied and to have them removed. I saw a different on each occassion both of whom were men. I have to say at first I was quite nervous about a man poking about between my legs but the first doctor was so friendly and reasurring. He made me feel very comfortable. The second doctor was equally as professional but maybe not quite as comforting, a good doctor all the same. I have to see a consultant during this pregnancy because of the above history and they say they will book me under the same doctor as last time. I'm hoping it is the first doctor I saw but I cannot remember his name so won't know which one I'm seeing until I meet him.

Because I got a tear during labour, I have to go and see a consultant to check that everything has gone back together ok and it's a bloke and i'm crapping myself! However, during labour, I had a few male doctors come and check on me and I couldn't have cared less! Before I had my bab, I really underestimated how little I would care about what had to be done just so she got out ok, they kept asking me if it was ok for them to do various things and no matter how embarrasing it was, I more or less just said "yes, just get on with it!".

xx

I won't mind a student midwife at all, but still find it wierd that a male wants to be a midwife  (maybe be sexist but it is tradionally a female role)

I say go with your heart. If it makes you feel uncomfortable now then put it in your birth plan! It's not set in stone, they would probably ask you again at the time if there was a student about anyway so you can see how you feel at the time.

I had student midwives at my antenatal checks who were lovely but very early in their training so really just doing things like bp and feeling/measuring bump. I also had a student doctor at Ross's birth and she really just observed (from what OH told me). In the end I had one midwife, a doctor and student doctor. And although not to my plan I felt it was dignified, treated with sensitivity and respect when they were present.

during my pregnancy i had a student midwife tht i felt really comfortable with. we became friendly and are the same age. She was gentle and i let her take bloody from me happily. In my birth plan i made sure that it was clear i would allow a student mw in and she was absolutely wonderful. I felt that she was being supervised the whole time but had freedom to get on with beign a MW. Im so proud of the fact she was there the whole time and hse held my hand as well as being hands on and giving me internals! I would let a student again anytime. HOWEVER, if you feel at any point through pregnancy or labour that it would make you comfortable a student being there then dont do it.....its about your feelings and the last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable during such an important/painful/uncomfortable/exciting time!! x
