Hi guys!

I wonder if some of you lovely people could offer me some very general advice. I'm 35 and although have never tried to conceive per se, I have been in long term relationships that have presented many opportunities to fall pregnant. To be honest, in my last 3 long term relationships there has been no use of the pill or similar as I pretty much 'know' that I won't fall pregnant. I know that must sound crazy but it's true, and i haven't. (Let me specify now that I'm a health freak and am very safe and careful with regard to STD's etc- the last thing I want to do it create a poor and inappropriate picture of myself when I'm as clean as a whistle :)). Anyway, my doctor found a small cyst on my left ovary and stated that it shouldn't really cause problems with conception.

For the first time in my life it has actually all become a concern to me. I've never been bothered about babies before but since meeting my fiance (we're getting married next year :)) I've started to feel the desire to start a family at some point. Obviously, age isn't on my side and I'm aware that we couldn't drag our heels 'too' much but my worry is that it's not going to happen.

I have never been put on any sort of hormones so I have no idea how successfully these work. Is anyone aware of cases whereby someone has never fallen pregnant yet is successful with assistance of some kind? I hope the answer to this is yes, naturally. I am fully prepared to be facing some sort of battle but I'd just like to hear of a few cases if possible...

Many thanks all. From a worried person...

Hiya Edie,

I was actually similar to you in that in my past 2 previous relationships i didn't use any contraceptives (knowing they both didn't have STI's - one was a virgin and then other had tests done).

When we went for tests, i didn't have anything wrong with me in the slightest.

Are your periods "normal"? Are they regular and a reasonable length? Do you have any mid cycle bleeding?

If you answered yes, yes, no - then chances are that your hormones and things are all fine.

Have you ever had chlamydia? Have you ever been tested?

Chlamydia will mess up your internal tissues and can block tubes and scar ovaries and your uterus.

The only thing i would advise you having if everything else appears to be ok is an FSH bloodtest to indicate your egg quality.

Thank you so much Louise and apologies for the delay!

Yes, my periods are fairly regular (give or take a week or two) in comparison to how they were years ago. When I was younger I had an eating disorder and as a result missed months here and there. For the last 6 or so years they've been back on track though.

Funnily enough, I did have Chlamidya from a BAD boyfriend about 11 years ago. Luckily for me it was dealt with pretty much straight away. I feel awful even admitting that :( I hear that can render you infertile? Is any damage irreversible?

My doctor is currently referring me to the womens hospital again so I'm going to get the ball rolling...

Worried :(
xx

Chlamydia damage can render you infertile and depending on the extent of the damage, it can also be untreatable.

That said, if you got it cleared up pretty much immediately then chances are that there will be no negative impact. I think it's mainly for people who get it and don't realise for years that really suffer.

It's good that you got your referral :)

I pray it's all okay. The doctors have never mentioned anything about it! My partner and I broke for a couple of months and when we got back together I contracted it. We lasted about 2 weeks and I started seeing someone else. It was then that it was picked up so I'm hopeful that it was spotted quickly. Gosh, it all sounds so awful but I'm truly a good girl :)

I'm very worried but I can just keep on hoping.

Thank you x

I suddenly panicked that I may still have it but I think that's crazy thinking....damn my head!!

I'm sure you'll be alright :) You'll have to be tested again for it anyway.

Getting tested is the first step and hopefully it will all be fine. I have used contraception but have messed up a number of times, never used the morning afterpill and never got pregnant. I started to think as you did but once we actually deliberately left it to nature we got pregnant quickly. I was surprised as I too thought I would never get pregnant. Sadly that ended in an mc but I won't be giving up. As the doc said the cysts shouldn't be a problem (my ovaries are covered in them, as are many women's who successfully get pregnant. Have you actually started actively trying? Are you measuring temp and using OPKs to see if you are ovulating? This is all stuff you can do at home and it may have just been timing which meant you didn't before. Sorry If i've misunderstood anything in your post. xxx
