Going to start trying to conceive soon so wondering what I should do in the months leading up to trying.

* Heard it's smart to start on folic acid in the months leading up to trying, is there anything else I should be taking?

* What's the deal with preconception visits? Do we go to my GP or his or both?

* How much should I cut my caffeine intake? I drink 4-8 cups of coffee a day (heh).

Thanks guys!

Hey Sev

If you have a good multi vitamin you can combine it with angus castis or fertipil/Fertilaid. It will help to regulate your cycle. Make sure you have a good and healthy diet, try and do light exercise ans drink loads of water!

I went to my gyni to have a papsmeer done and ultrasound to check for any problems. My DH did not get tested prior to TTC. Most couples will get tested only after 6-12 months trying. (6 months if you are over 35)

Try and limit caffeine intake as much as possible. You don't have to cut it out completely.

Then, prepare yourself for an emotional ride. Accept that it might take longer than a year to conceive. Be kind to yourself and your partner and most of all, try and enjoy this part of your life's journey!

There are recommended limits for caffeine intake. My DH is on one cup of coffee a day. Apparently you can have one 1 12oz cup of coffee a day. You could try switching to green tea, which has actually been proven in some limited studies to help fertility. Vitamin D is very important to fertility too. I take a small dose a day and use a litepod in winter. I also take iron water (Spatone) as iron is really important for fertility but the tablets are nasty and hard to digest. Eat well - lots of fruit and veg. Relax and get lots of sleep. Yoga is good too. You need to take folic acid for 3 months prior to conception ideally.

Don't know about preconception visits - I think it's worth you both seeing your GPs in case they want to do general blood tests.

I think folic acid and vitamin D are the only officially recommended vitamins. We do take a his and hers conception vitamin but just the Tesco own one.

I think from memory, one cup of coffee a day is recommended but neither of us are coffee drinkers so may be wrong about this.

We didn't see the GP until we started having problems.

Probably the best advice I have is be kind to yourself. It will be an emotional journey. Prepare for it to take longer than you'd like it to but hope that it doesn't.

Good luck!!
