29/07/12 39+3 - had very mild period pains and was feeling a lot of pressure down below. Couldn't get comfy on gym ball which was strange as its been a life saver all pregnancy. I assumed my long walk the day before brought baby down a bit. Went to bed anyway & had trouble sleeping.

30/07/12 39+4 - 2am woke up with urgent need to pee as usual & back ache/stomach cramps, went to loo to find I had so much bloody mucas when I wiped. Told DH I think baby might be with us in the very near future... Went downstairs and kept having contractions roughly every 8 minutes lasting nearly 2 mins. They got worse in next few hours but started getting further apart. Rang labour ward just to see what they advised & to make them aware I might be in labour. They told me to call back when contractions were coming more frequently & stronger, at least 3 in 10 mins. Decided to have a warm bath to see if it helped with the back pain as this was what was most painful. Bath didn't seem to work at all so eventually got out when I found the energy. Had a lie down on sofa & just tried to sleep a bit because I thought its going to go forever!!
It got to about 11am and they were getting more regular and stronger, really painful in my back. Had to lean against the wall with DH rubbing my back so hard. Had few paracetamol which didn't exactly help! At about 2pm contractions were very painful and although they weren't coming thick & fast, I was worried about the amount of blood I was loosing in my show - was getting clots & soaking pads like a period. Called triage who told me to go in & take pads. As I'm the only driver in the house we walked to the hospital which isn't far, over a bridge with lots of steps which I'm convinced helped! Triage told me the blood loss is normal & it's just my show. Examined me & to her amazement I was 3-4cm! She said I had done so well & didn't look like I was in too much pain yet. Gave me some codeine & a very good stretch & sweep. Told me she could see baby's head through the waters & he had lots of hair. Very weird!
They said I could go home as its not far & come back when the contractions are unbearable or walk around the hospital grounds. Decided to walk home again & utilise that bridge! Could barely get to the bridge before I was having much stronger contractions & feeling more pressure. Got home, mum arrived at 4 and I felt I wasn't coping as well any more so decided to go back to triage. Arrived there about 4:15 and was amazed to be told I was 5-6cm and was on way to labour ward!! Eek!

Arrived on labour ward, was given gas & air which sent me loopy for about 10 mins, thought I was drunk & my nose was gonna fall off! As I have group b strep, they needed to get a cannula in my hand. I'm not joking when I say they tried at least 20 times to get one in, they kept hitting a valve which was awful, but not half as bad as the pain in my back! Once IV drip was in I was free to stand over the bed & get my back rubbed loads, i felt like I was constantly sucking that air in!! Contractions got so much worse & i couldn't sit down at all. Made them give me something else for pain, kept asking for an epidural but they refused as i was doing so well apparently! They stabbed some meptid in my bum instead which did nothing whatsoever! Arched over the bed now when i said im going to pee myself soon & pop, out come waters at 8pm ish. They quickly got a pad on me to check them, lucky they did as baby had pooed inside so they needed to monitor me. They quickly did an internal & was so surprised I was 10cm! Ahhhh! Monitor was quickly put on me but baby's heartbeat kept dropping to 70 - 80. It did keep coming back up but they weren't happy with it dropping so low so often.

So, operation get baby out. I was told to push which I started doing after they took the gas & air from me. Wasn't pushing for too long before there were docs everywhere making me sign a consent form for a c sec!?

Got rushed to theatre which was awful as these contractions & the pressure was so intense. They made me sit on the edge of the bed to get a spinal in - this did not hurt at all, it was just the pushing feeling I couldn't hack as they told me I wasn't allowed to push & had to be still!! I'd like to see them try that....

Anyway, ive totally forgotten to say they thought he was back to back & at a funny position. They started by trying to get him out by ventouse, 2 failed attempts later they gave me an episiotomy and tried forceps. No such luck so had to push him back up inside me for a c sec. My baby boy was born at 22:16 and daddy got to hold him. He soon got taken away from me, I think this might have been because I took a turn for the worst & lost 2 litres of blood! In recovery I was not with it, i had fluid drips, had to have urgent blood tests, kept loosing so much blood on my pads like soaking them & the bed through in a minute. Had to have a blood transfusion which ended up being 4 bags of the stuff. Was pumped with more fluids as well. More cannulas went in as I then had a reaction to the blood! Also got an infection so I was kept in the hospital for 5 days :(

Poor little Stanley has 2 fluid filled pouches on his head where the ventouse popped off twice. He was so upset if anyone touched his head for the first few days. I have put ON weight since delivery thanks to all the fluid they gave me - my legs are massive & hard!

Anyway we are home now & he is gorgeous. He doesn't settle very well at night in his bed but we're working on that!

Hope the pic of him works!!
