Jack just wont settle himself back to sleep if he wakes up in the night.. if he sleeps through theres no problem.. but last night he woke up at 10pm standing up and screaming his had off... he didnt settle again until about 4am with rocking :( . and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with him coz as soon as u pick him up hes quiet again..
so my question is how did you do controlled crying?
how long did you leave them before you literally gave up and just got them out?
because we have try b4 but after 2 hours of him getting really worked up i just couldnt leave him any longer....
and how long did it take for it to actually work?

Thankyou for any advice.

I think the key is consistency.
You need to be strong and NOT pick him up. If you pick him up after two hours of crying then he just learns that if he cries for ages, he will eventually get a cuddle.
Make sure you have a good bedtime routine (bath, milk, book, cuddle etc) then put him down in his cot.
Leave him for a minute of crying then go back in and calmly stroke his tummy/back and 'shhhhhh'. Stay in there for a max of 2 mins and come out even if he is still screaming. Then leave it 2 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins. I could never leave it longer than 10. But don't pick him up. Be confident and calm. I used to have to go out and leave OH to do it because I found it so hard.
BUT it does teach them how to sleep. It does work. I took loads and loads of advice on it from books, GP, sleep specialist and HV.
If you have any more questions, always PM me. I'm a blooming expert on sleep problems because we had so many problems with Tom's sleep.
Good luck
Lucyx

PS: If he's standing up, just gently lie him back down again. Always be calm and reassuring.
The first two nights should be the worst but after that, as long as you're consistent and confident, it should get better. Should be sorted within a week. x

its so hard isnt it. but you're right he knows that if he waits long enough he can get away with it... ive got the day off tomorrow so im gonna try it tonight...

I agree with Lucy, a nice pre-bed routine etc always helps. It took 2-3 nights before LO (totally used to mummy coming trotting in everytime he even wimpered or wiggled around) would settle and you know he's actually happier for it because he's getting a good nights sleep instead of waking up a few times just because he wants attention. The first night was dreadful, I put the night light on, pulled the door over (wouldn't shut it) and he cried the first time for about 35 minutes, little sobs, OMG it broke my heart I was in my bed tears rolling down my face with DH kinda doing the whole  he needs to learn routine....he woke up a little later cried for 5 minutes or so and that was him. The following night he was up for about 10 minutes if that and it wasn't crying or sobbing just winging really little wining noises and lots of crawling around in the cot. The 3rd night (and ever since) he goes to bed at 8.30pm and wakes anywhen between 7-8am. It really is hard but you have to be consistant and you have to stick with it. Yes it's hard but honestly once they realise and what not it's heaven, and they are so much happier for it in my opinion. It's worked for us and I'm finally catching up on my own sleep now.

well it took 2 and a half hours  . but he did go to sleep all by himself after that time... so hopefully it will be better tonight.

You will get there, it's hard but do the same tonight, bet it's half an hour instead (if that...) it's amazing how fast they learn and adapt xx

i hope you're right. i nearly caved at 2 hours lol. but he slept through until half 7. so i think thats pretty good.

thought id update if anyones interested
It worked, he now going into his cot at 6:30 and is asleep by 6:45 and then sleeps through until 7 :D

We really, really want to try CC with Isaac, but he's still in our bedroom as we're still waiting to move, so think it will have to wait :( He's not too bad but re-settling is a case of rocking/cuddling a lot of the time

Yeah we did it when Oran was in with us, and it worked fine, he slept better (woke less) but when he did wake even though it still woke me (him fidgeting) he could actually hear him trying (and managing) to settle himself so I managed to go straight back to sleep. The only reason ours went TU was teething started and lasted about 3 months, then was ill, then we knew a month later were going on holiday so were going to do it again when we came back but then we knew we were moving so again decided to wait till we knew would be settled in a new room. TBH sounds weird but im looking forward to starting it just so Oran can have a good nights sleep (me to!)

PS sorry for the thread hijak above

jacks been in his own room for a while now. we had the problem with getting him in the habit of being rocked to sleep in his chair  so you never knew when he was going to go to bed lol. i think the main insentive (sp) for us was with another LO on the way i didnt wanna be rocking 2 of them :rotfl:
