When you get the urge to push does it automatically mean that you're 10cm fully dilated and ready to give birth?
Or do you always get the urge to push even though you'd not be dilated and you'd have to fight against pushing till the midwife tells you to push?

Not sure if this happens to everyone but I couldn't help pushing at 5cm whilst I was waiting for my epidural, every contraction made me push despite the midwife telling me I really mustn't do it. I don't know if it would have carried on like that as thankfully I got the epidural and all that went away. I'm pretty sure most people don't get an urge to push until their body is actually ready, mine just wasn't behaving that day! ;) x

When I got the urge to push I was 10cm and just had to go wi it xx

With my first I got the urge to push from 2-3cm but we later found out my daughter had her head turned and that's why
With my 2nd I never really got the urge to push as most describe but was told to push by the midwife

I got the urge to push when I was 9cm but close to 10cm as she could push my cervix away (whatever that meant) MW told me to go with my body and if I felt urge to push then to do it while they watched and assisted of needed. I think I only done about 5 pushes and she was here x

i was laughed at when i said i needed to push, i was examined 3 hrs before and was 3cm. she wouldnt check again for another hour but i couldnt stop pushing with every contraction - she checked me and i was 10cm !!

Our bodies know what they are ment to do

xx

My urge to push came at 10cm - it was the urge to push that prompted them to re examine me :)

However I generally think it's important not to push when your not fully dilated :)

I had the urge to push when I was in the birth pool and the stupid mw didn't check me just said to go with it, turned out I was only 4cm and really inflamed my cervix :( x

My mw checked I was 5cm only minutes later my waters went and was told if I need to push do so. So I did no problems. (Was my second child tho)

I had the urge to push for a good while and had to ask to be checked, I was 10cm and they told me to just go for it. :)

I didn't get the urge to push until i was ready to (10 cms). Normally the midwife recognises the transition stage as that's the stage when the mother most likely gets panicky or feels they can't do anymore. That stage doesn't last long before the urge to push comes along. Looking back I am in awe at how the body takes over and it just happens-I think thats probably where the panicky bit comes from because its like the bodies going to do it whether we want it too or not! :)

U didn't get the urge to push till I was 10cm n it was defo time to push even tho I was only 6cm a few mins before n midwife luckily believed me n checked n I went with with my body n pushed him out in20 mins. Trust ur body n force the midwives to check u!!!

With 1st and 2nd I was 10 cm when I got the urge. With 3rd I started getting the urge to push at 7cm and he was born 20mins later. With 4th I was 6/7 cm when they broke my waters and I felt the urge to push 40mins after that. (not sure how dilated I was) x

I don't remember pushing before I was fully dilated?

I stalled at 6cm, ended up on the drip, the dilated much quicker than expected from 6-10cm  thankfully MW recognised this and checked me regularly.

I might be weird but I adored the pushing stage! It is so empowering !

X

They put me on the drip, so from that moment on (I was already near or on 8 cms so why she felt the need to i don't know) I didn't know what was going on. I was too busy dealing the amount of contractions and severity of them on top of that having gas and air like it was an oxygen tank.
At the moment I was told to push, having a back to back baby I couldn't feel myself pushing at all nomatter how hard I tried. Because I was on the drip I was only given an hour or less because my baby got distressed from the stupid drip so they ended up with assisted delivery. I can't remember if they cut before or after, but I never hard the burning sensation when baby's head is nearly born.

But they usually tell you when to or you tell them when u have the urge x

The urge to push came at 10 cm dilated for me. It happened quicker than the doc expected. It was the weirdest feeling. It wasn't so much an urge, more my body just totally taking over. I had no choice in the matter! Not sure what happens if you start to push before 10cm. Your mw will know the answer xx

I think my midwife recognised I was in transition as I begged for epidural and saying I wasn't coping, (I had only been checked an hour before and I was 4cm!) then I felt like I needed to pass a large stool and she told me to go with my body and feeling the need to push (without checking me) and I did and it was fine! I did worry about not being 10 cm and she told me to go with my body!

I'm with Carnat22. ..I felt such a sense of relief when it came to the pushing stage, I loved it! I felt with contractions your dealing with the pain but when a contraction comes when at pushing stage your pushing the pain away rather than just dealing with it if that makes sense? I felt like that anyways.
My MW could tell I was progressing as I was breathing through contractions but when I was close, I was more grunting through them x

I know it depends on how the baby is positioned but for me, I had Completely straight forward birth, no one had to tell me to push! Was a completely natural thing that was happening whether I liked it or not so I went with it! It's like the urge to vomit, its happening so go with it!

I had an urge to push, in fact was pushing uncontrollably before I was fully dilated. Baby was back to back which is aparrantley why. Only lasted for one contraction and then I guess baby turned. It was quite scary as I knew I shouldn't be pushing but I just couldn't stop it. I had no urge at all to push when I was 10cms. My body was exhausted, contractions weak and few and far between. I had to watch the machine to see the numbers go up so I knew when to push! Ended up with a ventous because they kept cranking up the drip to get my contractions going again but baby was not happy so they had to get him out.
