OH thinks they are a waste of money and thinks that we can use a changing mat on the bed. I was in agreement at first, mostly because there was no room in the bedroom but we have since re-jiggled things in the room and there is plenty of space. Im wondering if it would be necessary to get one, especially as we are planning to use cloth nappies.

Im thinking about something like THIS

That's lovely and a good height but would you have enough space in it for all the little bits and pieces. We just bought a chest of drawers that's waist height and I am going to put the changing mat on top. The drawers are really deep so plently of room for all bubs necessitites.

I am afraid I am with your OH too..... all the advice I have had from friends etc... is that they used their changers for about 3-4 months, until the baby could roll and then they changed them on the floor... so I wouldn't buy a special unit as I personally could not justify the cost! we are going to put a change mat on the top of the normal chest of drawers.

But then if you really need it - go for it! :D

I'm not getting one, i've made up my mind. I'm going to put the changing matt on the bed

We used a changing mat on the floor for the first month or so which was really painful for my back and after a c-section. We then decided to get a chest of drawers changing unit (it was a wooden edge around the top to hold the mat) for Charlies room and we still use it now as its so sturdy. We tried using the mat on our bed but found he sunk down into the mattress so it was abit difficult plus with the unit we have it can easily be used as just a chest of drawers when we finish using the top part.

You can get universal cot top changers which just slide underneath the cot when youre done :) Theyre about 20 quid in mothercare. I always find if I change eefie on a soft surface i.e. the bed, his nappies always leak :?

I've got a unit with shelves underneath that I've put baskets on and store all he's nappies and cleaning stuff. I love it and use it all the time to change, wash and dress Dan. I got it off ebay for £25. Bargin!
Personally I would recommend one. Not only for changing nappies but after he gets out of the bath, to dress him and top to tail washes. Everything's to hand. Also if he pees, which he has done a lot, it won't go all over your bed!!

The one we have is on top of a chest of draws type thing...once baby is too old to be changed up there you can secure it and add a shelving unit above it and it looks like regular furniture that would last years instead of just a changing station that might last a few months. Once LO can roll quite happily your better off with a mat on the bed/floor.

That one you posted is lovely though although I don't think you'd get too much use out of it since babies can start wiggling around and rolling from just a few months.

I change Dylan on the floor or on the bed...We have hardly used his nursery since he has been born except to get clothes, so he would of outgrown it by the time he will be in there. We also dress Dylan in the liunge in a morning and we bath him in the lounge as our bathroom is downstairs.

We have one of them cot top changers and they are really handy for when they have had a bath, but with one of them and a changing unit downstairs I still usually change him on my bed. Its more usefull for when they are in their own room after baths other wise its not really worth it.

I'm buying a chest of drawers that are about the right height, so although they are expensive I'll be using them after anyway. My friend got a chest of drawers from ikea that has a changing bit on the top, I can't find it on their website now but I'm sure she said that it was only about £80.

I think getting a changing table that is also a chest of drawers is a good compromise because you'll use it in future, whereas a trolley style changing table might not get any use after 4 months.

floor, bed, or sofa. i couldnt be arsed to have to go to a set room to change her bum, i mean what if corries on? just another way for them to get money if u ask me. I think for me it would have been nice to have one at the start when i lived in the bedroom for a week or 2 lol, but after that it wouldnt have got used.

Im getting one, partly for the storage space and the fst I dont want to be bending over all the time.
I change stephen on the bed, and even with a towel and a changing matt it can get a bit messy and ihave to change my bed!and i cant lean on the floor cos of my back.
So im all up for getting one.

i still use my changing unit now. his nappies etc are all stored in unit so im not worrying abouit him rolling off if i need anything. i find it keeps him in control as if i try to change him on bed, floor etc he just rolls over and tries to crawl away. im guessing he knows there isnt the space on the unit. being 8 months pregnant aswell it means im not bending over lower surfaces or getting on floor.

I also couldn't decide what to do with the changing...I was looking at the changing units as well. Saw this one particular in Mothercare, in store. Good things are-usefull storage space, attached bath, will be quite handy for changing baby. :)
Not so good things: on internet changing units looks much smaller. This particular one is quite huge :? , you will use it just for few months, and, cos it doesn't have any other function, it will probably end up in the garage. And, it looks a bit "medical"...

I decided to get somethig like this

At least you will be able to use it afterwards just as a storage space. And it is much prettier too :D

Oh thats very similar to my one. I've even got the baskets! Its so pratical, I really wouldn't be with out it. Dan is nearly 6 months old and I still use it at least 8 times day (changing, washing, dressing).

I had one first time round. We were on a tight budget and it was the only thing I thought wasn't really necessary but It was FAB! I think it was about £40 from ToysRus. (might be a compromise for you - to find something cheeper) I kept it in the loft and will definitly use it again this time. I used it until DD was out of nappies at 23mths, but she was ace and not much of a wriggler.

I'm a childminder now and change nappies on the floor. It's much easier to change them at a unit.
