We are struggling with boys names. We both really like "Jake" but my friends little boy is Jacob, and I'm not overly keen on that anyway.

I'm a Kim and not a Kimberley, so it possibly wouldn't be that odd for us to call our child a shortened version...

Opinions???

My nephews are Charlie, Freddie and Tommy (not Charles, Fredrick and Thomas)

xxxxxx

I think it's fine to call your child the shortened version. I actually think it's better.

I knew this girl who called her son Theodore and then said "obviously he'll only ever be Theo, he'll probably never be called Theodore!" So that seems really silly to me!

I think it's absolutely fine to use the shortened version! Even my great grandfather was Charlie not Charles. Some names are just better in their shortened form.

My nephew is Olly and not Oliver, which I always thought was a little strange, I think kids should have the option of a longer name when they're older in case they want to use it. My LO is Caleb purely because it can't really be shortened!

But if you're kim and not kimberly, then it would probably be nice to have a shortened version.

Jake is a nice name, my nephew is actually Olly Jake, and a girl who I went to uni with just called her LO Jake.

If you like shorter names then how about

Fred/Freddie
Tom
Dan
Sam (my OH wanted to call our son Sam after my Dad, instead his middle name is Samuel)
Stan (I'm obsessed with the name Stanley)

At the end of the day, everyone has a different idea of the whole shortened names think, and some people will always dislike your name choice, so do what you love!

We have a Zack not zachary it bugs me when people call him that. If you like the shortened version go for it.

I'm calling my son Oliver but don't want him being called olly whilst he's still a baby but obviously when he starts nursery/school kids are going to call him whatever they want anyway so probably best to use the shortened version because that's what he will be called when he's older x

I named my DD Abby because I wasn't particularly keen on Abigail and knew her name would most likely be shortened by everyone to Abby anyhow - but now some people shorten it to Ab or Abs which really annoys me and I partly blame Eastenders lol. My eldest DS is Nathan and I quite often call him Nat, yet my younger DS is Samuel and although I don't mind his name being shortened to Sam by others, I will only ever call him Samuel.

I like both Jake and Jacob though xx

Im a jenni or a jen and not as named jennifer.

Yes it does give you the option but seems silly
