My little lady is having cuddles with her daddy so I thought I'd take the time to write my birth story before I forget.

It all started when I was 6 days overdue on the morning of Monday 9th Sept. My mw gave me a sweep, I was already 1-2cm so she managed to do a good sweep and said she would be surprised if it didn't work. OH was at work and DS at school so my mum came round to keep me company as I was getting bored waiting around for baby and because I think she was worried I would go into labour all on my own! By lunchtime I had mild lower back pain and a periody feeling. As the day went on I started to get some very mild tightenings/Braxton Hicks that would come quite regularly for an hour or so then die down. I was hopeful that it was the slow start of things. Mum went home after OH and DS got home and I just carried on as normal for the evening. The tightenings continued but they didn't seem to be getting more painful and they were still quite irregular.

Later in the evening things did seem to step up a notch so around 10 I asked mum to come back over as she was going to be my second birth partner. Unfortunately pretty much as soon as she arrived everything seemed to stop! I still had backache but the contractions tailed right off and I was only getting one every now and again. I tried to stay mobile to get things going again but we were all tired so around midnight we decided to try and get some sleep, mum stayed on the sofa. We all managed a few hours and by the morning of Tuesday 10th things hadn't progressed at all. OH decided to go to work as he was only on an early shift and it seemed unlikely that much was going to happen before he got home so mum stayed with me, we got DS off to school and I tried to stay as mobile as possible through the day.

I continued to get contractions all day but they remained mild and were still a bit stop/start. Mum went home for a bit to get some rest in case I needed to call here back later. Then in the evening I finally felt like the contractions were getting a bit stronger. I had some tea and a bath and by the time I got DS to bed at about 7.30 I was starting to need to breathe through each contraction and I would've described them as painful rather than just uncomfortable as they had been during the day. I was still nervous things would stop again so I made a plan to keep mobile until about 10 o clock then if things were still happening I would stay up and call the hospital but if things stopped again I would go to bed to get some rest. OH and I watched the Great British Bake Off hehe whilst I bounced away on the birthing ball and by the time it finished at 9 I was getting really uncomfortable. The contractions had intensified a lot and and were coming about every 5 minutes. By half 9 I decided I should call labour ward for some advice as being my second baby and as we live half an hour from the hospital I didn't want to leave it too late before going in. The midwife suggested I make my way in so we called OH's mum over to look after DS and my mum to come with us to the hospital.

The contractions remained strong and regular on the way to the hospital, not a particularly pleasant car journey! But I was still worried that things would stop again or that I would get sent home. We reached the hospital at about 10.30 and then things stepped up a notch even more. I was contracting almost constantly on the walk to labour ward.

When we reached labour ward the mw did all my checks and put me on the monitor and by now I was finding it very hard to breathe through the contractions. OH and mum were a great support and I managed to cope with their help and hands to squeeze! Mw could see on the monitor that the contractions were coming very regularly and she said 'we definitely won't be sending you home!' At some point mw tried to cannulate me as a precaution because I bled heavily after having DS. She had two attempts but couldn't get it in so she had to get a senior mw in to do it.

After a few minutes on the monitor mw was happy with the trace and baby was still wriggling around loads so I was taken off and then mw examined me. Mw thought I was 8cm! But she wasn't sure because my waters were bulging so she took ages checking. By this point the contractions were so intense and coming one on top of the other and I was beginning to really struggle and panic a bit. Again OH and my mum were fantastic at supporting me. Then my waters went with a massive gush, the mw had to jump out of the way! In a strange way this gave me some relief and almost instantly I felt urges to push. There was some meconium in my waters so mw said I would need to go back on the monitor but then she saw that I was starting to push and said 'or we're just going to have a baby instead!' The senior mw was still hanging around and both of them starting rushing to get there gloves on.

I was still panicking and struggling a bit because of the speed and intensity of it all but the midwives and OH and mum were all fantastic at helping me focus and I soon realised that I had to calm down and just push! I coped by thinking that in just a few minutes I was going to finally meet my little girl and the harder I pushed the quicker that would be. I only had to push for about 10-15 minutes before she was born at 2 minutes past midnight on 11th September 2013. She was handed straight to me and it was just amazing! I'm welling up just thinking about that moment. OH cut the cord which he is very proud of :-) She didn't cry straight away so I was worried if she was ok but mw assured me she was fine.

I had a second degree tear so had to have stitches. I also bled quite heavily again, although not quite as bad as with DS. Luckily I was already prepared with the cannula and the MWs were very quick at getting the necessary drugs into me and they worked well so I didn't feel scared like the last time. We were transferred to the ward and OH was able to stay with us overnight which was lovely as that wasn't allowed when I had DS. We were home by the time DS got home from school that afternoon!

I am so completely in love with my little girl and am treasuring every single moment as I know how quickly she is going to grow and change. She is breastfeeding like a superstar and DS has been absolutely brilliant and loves his little sister to pieces. And her daddy is in awe of her!

Wow that was an epic birth story! But I wanted to get every detail down so I didn't forget as all in all I had a fantastic birth and am really pleased with how everything went and the care I received. I'm knackered and have to take iron tablets because of the blood loss but I am absolutely loving being a mummy to two :)
