Hiya, we have always wanted to have a Scottish name for our wee one but find that a lot of the Scottish names, in particular the girls names, are just not that pretty or are very old fashioned! I also want a name that can be shortened for a nickname as with mine you can't and always felt I missed out not having a pet name when younger

For a boy we have Cameron (Cam/Cammy), Frazer (Fraz), Duncan (Dunc)

For a girl we have Heather (Hev?), Catriona (Cat) and Fiona (Fi) but I've recently gone off Catriona and Fiona! I've always loved Siobhan (Shi/Shiv) but not sure if I'd constantly have to correct people?!

What do you think? Any other suggestions I'd love to hear! x

My oh name is keir and he always gets compliments and its very scottish! I would love a Scottish name also im having a boy and having trouble. . They are all very old fashioned id like something a bit unusual but nothing too out there xxx

I called one of my twins Finlay, I think that is Scottish!

Scottish names I can think of are Dougal, Cailean, Ewan/Euan, Hector, Angus, Lewis, Donald,.

For girlies, Elspeth, Eilidh, Vhairi, Aileen, Camryn, Iona, Islay, Isobel, Kirsty.

Thanks for your suggestions girls, lots in there!

Roxie, I really like the name Kierr/ Kerr but can't shorten it, and that is kinda a big thing for me lol! I know what you mean about it being difficult, don't think Scotland has evolved in the name dept! What are your thoughts atm? x

Bev, I LOVE Finlay! I think dh likes it too but an old work mate and friend/acquaintance called her son that... not sure if I can too? x

Kinkers, Cailean is lovely and interesting! Almost sounds like Callum... will be getting mentioned to dh! Only snag is having to spell it all the time
I love Camryn for a girl! I dismissed Cameron for a girl as wouldn't want a girl getting confused for a boy, but Camryn works!
I have always adored Iona and Isla, but scared about them getting picked on... Iona= I own a.... and Isla... (Skye etc) Also with any future married name- pity! x

I love the name Mirren. I'm a Siobhán but it's an Irish name really, and another one you have to spell a lot. I got Shivs/Shivvie at primary school, and Sib/Sibby at high school, and my mum and aunties have always called me Vonny/Bonny which is sweet for a little one. Isla and Iona are popular at school, and don't get bullied, certainly no more than anyone else and for other things anyway, kids will always find something if they want to! X

Kierr/Kerr could just be 'K'? (or is that a bit rubbish lol)

I don't think Finlay is off limits, maybe if it was your best friend or a niece/nephew, I think it's fine if it's just a friend/acquiantance, it's actually quite flattering to choose the same name, I and love the name Findlay/Finlay too :)

Cailean is gorgeous and really unusual, and you have to spell a lot of these names all the time anyway, you'd get used to it? Will be mentioning that name to DH too....! x

I love Heather haha. I really do like my name. But the only short name I can have is Hev and I really don't like that lol ! X

I like heather too, I actually love the name Erica and apparently that is the Latin for heather. I'm from Glasgow too but to be honest I'm not that keen on a lot of traditional Scottish girls names. I do like catriona and fiona though, esp nowadays as no one calls their babies those names anymore so they would stand out from all the sophies, islas etc x

We loved

Kayleigh (kayls)
Isla
Heather
Elsie
Iona
Vaila

And boys
Cailean
Finlay
Donald

All i have in my head now is the iron bru advert... How about Fanny lol

Wow, lots of ideas again, thanks girls!

Julianne, I love Ruairidh but it has different spellings- all of which can be a nightmare! I am swaying to go 'what the hell'! I also really like Ailsa, but hadn't heard it before starting working with a new team and one of their daughters is called it. Most of the workmates children have Scottish names so it's making it more difficult! x

Gayle, I thought Duncan was too old fashioned but in the last 6 months or so it has really grown on me- it's certainly a possibility! Does your nephew like his name? x

Flutey, I know Siobhan is Irish but have loved it since a wee girl lol! I was hoping it could go undetected as non-Scottish hahaha!! ;) And very true re kids picking on each other x

Heather, am glad to hear that you love your name, it has neem one of my fav's since being a kid, and has never left my list! My problem is the same as yours, only shortened version is Hev, which I don't mind too much... x

Thanks Kay, I used to love both Catriona and Fiona, mainly cause they can be shortened and aren't that common atm, dh is confused as to why they have been sidelined lol! x

Lynds, thanks! Most of my fav's are on your list :D I had thought people would think we're fuddy-duddy's over our choices, but now I feel quite confident! x

Hahaha Dollface- I'll mention it to dh!!! Somehow don't think that will be making my shortlist ;) although I do know a (older) woman called Fanny- can't call her by it so always say Mrs .......!!!! x

Duncan is 10 and gets duncy.
He's very proud of his name as he doesnt live in the uk. Its defo a grower of a name. I love it now xx

Cailean is v popular where I live, I guess with any Gaelic name you have the annoyance of constantly having to spell it but I guess you could spell it differently if you wanted to?

Camryn is lovely isn't it? I know a little girl called Camryn but had never heard of it before she was born. It's quite similar to Camrie I think but not as popular. Iona and Isla are incredibly popular where I live, and I think Isla is getting more and more popular throughout the country so I don't think they'd get picked on, especially if they are living in Scotland.

That's good to know he's proud of his name Gayle! It is a grower of a name and not common which I like! x

Kinkers I mentioned Cailean to dh and he wasn't so keen, and tbh I have kinda gone off of it due to pronunciation and spelling :( I also googled Camryn for the origin and meaning thinking it was a name in it's own right, but since found out it's a modern variation of Cameron so I'm not sure now. Dh doesn't like it so I guess I don't have to think about it anymore! This is so difficult! Where is it that you live, out of curiosity?! x

Dont think there Scottish lol but I like kallyn/kallan and aidan just now id like to have 3 or 4 that I really love and name him once hes born still on the hunt all the time it really is so hard x

It is really hard Roxie! We've been thinking of names for a couple of years now and still aren't sure! It's a big responsibility to name someone and get it right! I like those names too but the Scottish version is Callan (one of my old bosses surnames!) and I have a nephew called Aiden. I'd like to have about 3 or 4 definites too and then if we change our minds on the 1st one after the birth we have others ready lol! xx
