A few of you probably know I went into hospital on Monday to be induced. We were told to get there at 7am by the doctor who booked it for us but when turned up apparently we were supposed to ring at and turn up at 9pm! So me and oh had a bit of an anxious wait before anything was to happen! I'd had back ache the previous 2 days and it turned out that baby was back to back which was a bit of a pickle. Anyway when the midwife done my first VE she said I was 6cm dilated which was a bit of a shock as I wasn't contracting regularly so they called and midwife in to to take me down to the delivery. She said I was a very unusual case but did say what she thinks is that the previous midwife could stretch my cervix to 6cm but I would probably be less dilated... She was right, I was in fact only 3cm dilated.
The fact was though that I gone in to be induced so we all decided instead of waiting for something to happen she would break my waters to kick start things off (propess had been mentioned but I didn't need it as I was already dilated). She asked me if I'd thought about pain relief. I wanted an epidural! She was worried things might happen too quick and did warn me that it maybe a case that I won't have time to have one as they need 20minutes to work, I said I still wanted one so she prepped me with canular etc before she broke my waters so all the anaesthetist had to do was numb me. Jolly good I though!!
She broke my waters at around 12.10am and my contractions got really strong, really quickly. Within 30mins I'd gone from 3cms to 8cms and just as the anaesthetist arrived I wanted to push - too late!! As I wasn't quite fully dilated she told me not too but it was really difficult as you just get this overwhelming urge and can't help yourself! (Never had this with my first as I had epidural!). The pain was just incredible and the thank goodness Scott was born at 2.30am as I don't know how I would have coped! The midwife had to cut me near the end to help the baby out, OH cut the cord. Then I had to deliver the placenta but as soon as that came out I gushed blood, turned out my uterus was bleeding. Baby was given to OH and about 10 people rushed into our room. I was a bit paniced by all the people. They managed to slow the bleeding but was told if it's still bad I'd have to go to theatre. They checked me after 30mins and luckily no theatre was required just stitches. I lost approx 1.594 litres of blood. Felt incredibly weak after but they've prescribed me a months worth of iron tablets.
Baby was fine! He weighed 8lb 12oz! OH chose name: Scott James Willis. He hadron have an ECG before we left hospital and they wanted me to stay a bit as I'd lost so much blood but his ECG came back all clear and they let us leave this afternoon!
I can't believe how different things were this time round. My first labour went on for around 2.5 days and this one was less than 2.5hours!! And I managed it with only gas and air - I'm a sissy when it comes to pain!!!
Anyway I hope the pic uploads ok! Looking forward to hearing about everyone else's births!
xx
