So at a week overdue I was beyond fed up with myself. New Year's Day we had been invited to my nanans for dinner and we spent most of the afternoon there. I was uncomfortable but no twinges to give me any indication what was coming later on. We left my nans around 5.30, bathed Sam, put him to bed, the usual. I then proceeded to eat my own body weight in cheese whilst still feeling uncomfy.
I was chatting to the lovely Sarah on Facebook about being incredibly fed up and watching the re-run of one born:what happened next? at around 11.55pm, when I felt a small gush. I told Luke that I thought my waters had gone and had a lie down on the bed with a pad on. Stood up, more water and plug, so I was pretty sure at this point it was definitely my waters.
I rang triage who said to head in at around 2am as they were busy. So called my mum and we had a cuppa when she arrived and a chat.
We arrived at the hospital at 2.30am and headed to labour ward. I was contracting every 5 minutes or so and they were enough to stop me walking.
I was hooked up to the monitor for a good hour and everything was in order. I was examined at 4 to confirm I was losing my waters. The midwife said it was definitely my waters but she couldn't even see my cervix and because of that she would need to book me in for induction the next day in case things hadn't started. So a little disheartened we were back home at 4.45am. As soon as I got in the car my contractions were coming thick and fast. Every time I moved I had the most horrendous pressure in my bum and it made my contractions pretty much back to back. When we got home, I got into bed and tried to doze (lol no chance of that happening) as wave after wave of contractions hit me. At 6.20am I spoke to the lovely Emma and said that I didn't think I could cope much longer at home without any pain relief and Luke and my mum said I should ring labour ward. So I did who said to head on in. I got in the car and I kept saying to Luke that I needed to push, the urge was overwhelming, he was panicking bless him.
I finally arrived on labour ward at 7.20am after a very embarrassing walk (on my own I might add as Luke was parking the car) in which I scared a nurse coming off duty and theatre staff who came barging out of the department to put me in a wheelchair lol.
The midwife who I'd been assigned to met us at the door when I told her again that I needed to push. She was very calming and said that it was probably just because baby's head was there and it was from the pressure. So off we were led into our room. She wanted me to pee in a pot, which of course I couldn't do, and she trotted off to get the bp machine and some bands for the monitor. I remember being really really annoyed because she wasn't there and I needed to push. She came back and I told her this again, she did try to soothe me but my body was instinctively pushing with each contraction anyway. So I was strapped up to the monitor and had my obs done quickly. She finally got round to examining me and was like 'oh your 9cms dilated. I can still feel a tiny lip of cervix but it could go very quickly' I did panic a little bit hearing that as that was what happened when I was having Sam only it didn't disappear and i pushed against it for an hour making his head swell.
She asked if I'd been having growth scans due to having a previously large baby to which i told her no. She wasn't very impressed as she thought I should have been offered them and so called in another midwife as a precaution incase she got stuck.
I asked for the gas and air at this point, more for something else to concentrate on rather than for pain relief. With my next contraction I couldn't help it I started to push. The midwife told me to use my gas and air, to which I replied that I needed to push, so she said to go with it. She was watching the monitors and with that first real push she told me that it was fine that I needed to push but I needed to get my baby out as she didn't like it. But after her heart rate dropping that once it was stable for the rest of the delivery. The midwife seemed to think Scarlett had been back to back and as she dropped down with that contraction shed turned causing her heart rate to drop. Would explain why all my contractions had been in my back and thighs.
So I started pushing at 7.40am and at 7.53am my beautiful little girl entered the world.
Luke was able to watch her crowning and got to cut her cord which he missed out on doing with Sam. It was such a different experience from my first labour and I couldn't be happier. I am so so in love with her.
Just a few shots to share aswell xxx
