Hi girls,

We are about to sign the consent forms and start our first IVF treatment. I'm wondering what your experiences of taking the drugs were as I've been reading about the side effects. Obviously everyone is different but did you take time off work or were you able to still work during the treatment?

I'm trying to figure out what to expect and decide whether to take time off. I'm self employed so not working means no money coming in, however I don't want to be off with nothing to distract me if I'm going to be absolutely fine!

Also, did you buy the drugs from the clinic or get them from Asda or an online supplier? My other half is talking about this as its meant to be cheaper but it's freaking me out as I'd rather get them from clinic so I can be sure its all the right stuff.

xx

I haven’t got any experience with this, but I think I’m with you, I’d rather get my tablets from a clinic rather than Asda. They are probably the same but if something didn’t work out I’d always blame myself for not using the clinics one.

How exciting that you’re about to go ahead and do this! I wish you so so much luck!

Keep us updated every step of the way xx

Thanks for the lovely reply. Excitement wasn’t a feeling I’d experienced yet, our chances of success are low, but you’ve reminded me that I need to stay positive so thanks. Good luck with your next steps too xx

Hey, I’d be interested to know about where is best to buy, my understanding is they are obviously exactly the same just the clinic can’t be responsible if you don’t have enough etc if your buying them yourself. I’m hopefully starting my first round in two weeks and have an appointment to go through my protocol next week so I will find out more.

I had a huge dilemma with work, as i work full time (40+ hours) and in male dominated industry. Obviously I don’t know how I’m going to react but I’ve negotiated going part time and I have started that after Christmas. I was really worried about work but this (ivf) is way more important and a few things have really already put it into perspective for me. I just can’t afford to be any more stressed than I need to be! I’m now going in doing my hours then using the rest of my time to look after me! I think this is the first time ever I’ve decided to be completely selfish. I guess it depends on what you want and what will make you happy and not more stressed?! And I know income also comes into it so it’s not always that easy to do what you want! When are you ladies looking at starting? It may be good to have a couple of people to chat to that are at similar stage! X

I get where you are coming from, it’s such a long journey to that point that you must be exhausted.

Try to be hopeful xx

I hear you on the stress! I have decided to cut back my hours and only take certain types of work and do things where I can work from home so it won’t matter if I’m moody / crying/ puking or sweating. We are getting our HIV test next week and signing the forms with a view to start in 4 weeks. One of my other concerns with stress is that all my friends come to me with their problems and two are having a pretty rough time just now. We’re not planning on telling many people that we’re doing this so I need to figure out a way to distance myself from situations that cause me stress without offending anyone. Anyway, keep in touch X

Hey there,

Bless you, try not to get too caught up in the million of possible side effects- everyone is different.

I had my 1st IVF cycle in Nov just gone and I’m signed up read to start no2 inxa few weeks. Sadly the 1st time wasn’t meant to be for us

I had really no side effects from the drugs. Felt a little bloated and heavy towards the end of the injections but that was all. The injections were fine the bit we both dogs hard were the days after egg collection. Waiting for updates and phone calls to see how they were doing and not knowing if I’d be called in for a 3 or a 5 day transfer.

I took 2 days off forbegg collection and the day after. In hindsight and for this next cycle the day off I felt would be better after egg collection. Give you time to relax after a rollercoaster time and to be able to sleep and take those phone call updates in the privacy of your own home (rather than hiding in a stockroom at work!)

The drugs for me were included in the package with my clinic, just do whatever is easier. I know money is obv a factor but don’t sweat the small stuff, save you energy for the cycle itself.

Best of luck !! Xx

Hi Bambi,

Good luck with your first round! im just about to start round 2! i'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you!

with my first round, I admit I didn't feel great! I felt quite sick, very bloated (none of my work clothes fitted properly which was a right nightmare) and just run down. Knowing what im in for this time round (a higher level of drugs) I feel more positive going into it! I did have some time off but I was signed off by my doctor (I had a rotten chest infection which they couldn't give me anything for, so my doc just signed me off as she felt my body was under enough pressure without trying to work with a infection but no meds if that makes sense) so the time off coinsided with my egg collection and transfer. if I hadn't of been signed off I definitely would have taken time off after my collection and a few days after transfer. its a bit sore after collection, so take a few sofa days and after transfer I felt great but just nice to have a few days at home with my feet up and take it all in.

one of my friends that went through it felt nothing, it really does vary from person to person! hopefully you don't get any reactions. if you want to chat you can always message me on here :)

agreed, it very very individual. I had only headache during my 1st protocol, and no symptoms at all during 2nd and 3d
