FTM here - I've been told I need to wash everything in non bio detergent (even brand new stuff because of babies skin being sensitive to manufacturing dyes etc). I've done all bedding and will do baby clothes / blankets over the next couple of weeks.
Does that include comforters / Muslins/ outer clothes etc? I've noticed some of the comforters and teddies people have bought us say 'surface clean only' - I don't want to ruin them - but then I'm thinking if they get covered in dribble and puke and other baby delights they're probs going to get bunged in the washing machine anyway!
How far do you take it, pre-washing brand new stuff?
Xxx

Personally I didn't do any comforters, toys etc. did all clothes and sheets. Muslins I can't remember ~ will prob decide this time based on how soft they are pre wash x

Im worried to take my stuff out the packet incase he turns out to be a she and everything is blue and non returnable lol

I've done everything what's washable but inside out, even accessories. I work in a shop, seen how clothes come in on deliveries covered in dust etc. seen things on the shop floor, people touching them then changing their minds. Even clothes returns go back on the shop floor and they have been in other people's houses or on other baby's trying them on.

Any teddys or comforters I put in a pillowcase's xx

I've washed everything second hand so far and all my sheets and towels. Banging a load in once a week for babies things, going to do the new stuff next week xx

I wash everything. Anything baby comes into contact with. I still wash all my 3 year old daughters clothes before she has worn them!

Oo that's a good idea with the pillowcase xjdx! Thank you ladies xxx

I've washed everything including toys and comforters on 30 degrees with fairy non bio gel

Iv washed everything! Comforters I hand washed, rinsed and delicate tumble dry...jelly cat toys etc and all came out good. Did toys and Muslins too as people touch everything when shopping! Washed anything that I have been given or bought myself! Also it smells clean! X

I have washed everything for baby, and in non bio too. Recently got a bunch of second hand towels and had them on the line today, love hanging washing out! :) Iihave done the bedding , new comforter ,blankets and bibs too. Also, Like someone said above, I usually wash new stuff before using anyway! X x

Does it have to be non bio? Friends have told me just to use our regular detergents etc so not sure now?

I genuinely think it doesn't matter which detergent you use. I don't continue to use it anyway, we can use anything in our house and it's always fine. So wouldn't worry, as long as it all has a freshen up it will be fine. X x

Oh gosh, seeing everyone else's replies maybe I should wash everything! X

I'm allergic to biological washing powder & little babies can have quite sensitive skin, so often best to start with non-bio just in case. Though if both you & oh are ok with biological bubs prob will be too. To be honest I did wash most new baby things but on occasion got caught out & baby wore new clothes never washed & she was fine (incidentally she has quite sensitive skin)

Is the powder the bit that can affect them?
Can i still go crazy with fabric softener ??
I absolutely love yellow lenor and comfort haha

I've still used fabric conditioner! I love those too! Blue comfort is my fave! I have washed my nightie and pjs in non bio too, just for the beginning for baby adapting. But fingers crossed he is like My others and has no reaction to any washing powder. I like washing new things just because of them being in the shop and people touching them etc. X

I haven't used softener as it can irritate, although iv used bio as we are both fine, I also have only used half the normal amount as the clothes aren't dirty!

I have a 3d scan in 3 weeks
I'm triple checking hes still a boy before I start ripping tags off lol

I was going to wash all new clothing etc, but have had a lot of people tell me they didn't bother and it's not end of world if you don't. Do you guys think we should wash everything then? Xxxx

I washed all clothes, sheets and muslins. Didn't think about soft toys. I had a romantic notion of washing everything when I was in mat leave but I wouldn't recommend that as baby was early so I had nothing washed and has to do a bulk load and my house was full of washing which I didn't have time to put away, drove me mad!

You can buy special baby washing liquid, my husband says it's a con as it's just non bio but I love it, it smells babyish if that makes sense x
