Hello! Sorry this is long, I don't expect you to read it all, I just wanted to write down every detail for me to look back on
I went into hospital on 11th August to be induced. I was strapped up to the fetal heartrate monitor for around 40mins before being given prostin gel, which was uncomfortable and freezing cold! I was then encouraged to move around and keep mobile, and that I would be given a second dose of gel in 6 hours time.
So we spent a very boring 6 hours walking around the hospital, sitting in the canteen, reading magazines on the ward.
I was strapped to the onitor again, and then given a second dose of gel at around 6pm-ish (I think?) By this time I had quite back lower back ache, and by the time OH had to leave (9pm) I was having mild contractions. They were just like very bad period pains, but nothing I couldn't handle. They got worse and by about 11pm they were so painful I couldn't physically lie down, and so spent the whole night awake and in pain - I kept being offered sodding paracetamol which didn't do anything, and ended up having a lavender oil bath at about 4am (I think the midwives wanted to shut me up, haha) but this actually helped quite a bit.
I think I got about an hours sleep before waking again as the ward started getting busy again.
I was miserable and shattered and couldn't wait to see OH who wasn't allowed in until 11am, so had breakfast (half a bowl of cold porridge ) and went to have another bath to help the pain. On my way to the bathrooms my waters broke in the corridor in front of the poor tea lady and I remember thinking "Ahhh thank god for that, things are moving along!" - this was around 8.30am. So I had to be monitored again, and the pains started getting even more painful and frequent. I was examined and told I was 3cms dilated but will need to be put onto the drip to speed things up now, so they told me to call OH for him to come in and was whisked over to the central delivery suite in a wheelchair because I was still leaking everywhere!
Once on the bed and hooked up to the monitors I was in a lot of pain and being quite vocal (which I always thought I would never be during labour!) and the midwife said "ooh dear, it gets a lot worse than this, you're not going to cope very well are you?!" - I think she thought I was putting it on! But I honestly was in a lot of pain at this point!
They tried to hook me up to the drip but my veins kept refusing - they had 4 different people and tried four different areas on my poor hands/arms to get the drip in, and I've got the biggest, darkest bruise ever covering a lot of my right arm because of it!
I was given a shot of pethidine to help the pain which didn't actually do anything apart from make me stupidly drowsy and sick. The next time she checked me I was 5cms and I begged for an epidural, and was given one around 5pm I think.
This was the biggest relief ever! I had a contraction whilst they were putting the needle in my back and having to stay still was AWFUL. I almost snapped my teeth biting down on the gas and air. But once it kicked in, I slept, which was bliss, and my contractions weren't painful at all, it just felt like I needed a big poo!
So me & Luke just chilled, read, watched TV and slept in the next couple of hours, until I was checked and found to be 9cms and that her head was really low, so I was advised to wait another hour which was really difficult because I really needed to push!
I started pushing at 9.45pm with the help of the midwife, because I couldn't really feel much by this point (I'd had my epidural topped up) and honestly I cannot recommend it enough - I felt no pain at all, only pressure, and when the midwife told me the head was half out and to reach down and touch it, I couldn't believe it. Within the next few minutes Luke was saying "I can see her little ears!" I gave a few more big pushes and the midwife shouted at me to stop and breathe, but it was too late and her head popped out and gave me third degree tears. Then within what seemed like seconds the MW was saying "Take her, take her!" and I was so shocked I didn't even cry, I just took her and she was perfect and pink and crying and Luke was saying how beautiful it was and it was just like out of a film
I was pushing for 40mins - she was born at 10.25pm.
I was upset that I had to be wheeled off to theatre for stitches, but fell asleep whilst they were doing it, and about an hour later was wheeled back to my delivery room where Luke was giving little Poppy a feed and a cuddle (they had to give her formula due to me being whisked off and her blood sugar was very low).
We came home on the saturday night and I am extremely sore, but she is soooo worth it. We are utterly besotted with her and she's made us the happiest people on the planet
