Today I saw the creepiest thing in a card shop. I was looking at the valentines cards and there were cards not just for lover, boyfriend, wife etc... but ones like from mum and dad, to a special little boy, for my grandad and.................. To MY DOG and From YOUR CAT!!!! Valentines cards!!!

What is this world coming to? It felt really creepy like it was crossing boundries that shouldn't be crossed. I half dont want to take part now :|

Oh we never do either, can't be ar**d with it tbh. It's nice to make your OH feel loved, but going to an overpriced restaurant to eat a limited menu is not our idea of fun. We are both Valentine's Day's grumps lol.

I completly agree  , it is a rip off for going out, buying flowers etc etc etc. :x and as for the cards well....................... :puke:

Since meeting my hubby Valentine dosnt mean anything as he shows me he loves me every day which means more to me than any card or bunch of overpriced flowers!!!

to be honest its only as time has gone by that it has become a thing about two lovers and the "sex" issue has come about valentines day was originally to show peoiple you care about each other and I actually used to love getting a card and a chocolate heart lolly form my mum and dad untill i was old enough to have boyfriends it made us feel loved and im sorry but if tha in your minds is "sick" well then whats this world coming to

I think what was being said about the cards was that they actually say 'from mum and dad', grandad', cat' etc. and that things are being taken too far I used to get cards fom my mum and dad but they were just a fun card with no detail of who they were from, as you rightly say it was used to let people know you cared about them, it is now so commercial that there's no romance left which is what it was sposed to be about isnt it?

Ummmm it partly actually commemorates rather nasty and bloody murder lol. So I'm not if it's a case of what is the world coming too, or where has it been lol : http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/pages/sa ... entine.htm Also, it was about romantic love in the Middle Ages, and presumable carried on as such - I've not heard of it ever being about expressing familial love before? Either way I still get pee'd off at the commercialization of it, but will stop before I really start to rant lol.

i cant agree more. it has become too comercial.

last year me and OH just went to the cinema and then for a drink. theres no need to spend heaps of money. its not what its about is it.

i saw a me to you bear in a card shop. it was really big and said i love you this much whith the arms open. didnt look at the price but bet it was like £50 £60

ETA:    more than £50. see here

Ok lol of were getting technical :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

still cimments such as "crossing boundries" seems really harsh and cruel especially for people like me who grew up with parents giving small tokens to us on valentines day, makes me feel as if i had an unsavoury upbringing, I do agree that its become over commercialised and if iv read comments wrong ill apologise but comments such as the one aforementioned didnt sound as if thats wat the point was being directed towards

dont get me wrong, my mum used to get me a card when i was little signed 'your secret admirer' which is just a bit of fun. However the boundaries of love shared between a couple and a family have been blurred slightly (everybodies boundaries are different, i know that) but in my job i work with families who have been destroyed by child abuse so the cards do not seem quite so innecent to me. The fact that card companies are cashing in on the cards doesnt quite sit so comfortable with me. Also the dog and car cards, thats just crazy.

Then i can see your point i do agree whole heartedly that valentines day is too commercialised now with things such as cat dog etc but i think the greatest love of all is between mother and child and i see nothing sick in a mother/father sending a valentines day card to their child to show them they are loved, however the child abuse thing i sa different matter altogether i can see why you would think they cross certain boundries but i dont think clintons cards is trying to promote child abuse

thats wrong

me n my OH just get each other a card, waste of money going out n buying presents etc!

my mam always got me a valentines day card and pressie when I was little. Bless her. I think it's really sweet.

I'll do it for Lydia too when she's old enough to understand what valentines day is. I like to think of it as a day to tell people that you love them, not necessarily in a romantic/sexual way.

Phil disagrees with me - he thinks it's just for lovers. Blah.

ETA: not that I don't tell Lydia every day that I love her, I do, but you know what I mean.

I know the love between a mother and child is the purest thing and im not saying i will not express my love for my child.

But we all have our boundaries. When my OH lived with his mum and dad they would be so open about each others bodies, they would walk in on one another while in the bath and on the loo and would walk around their house naked even when my OH was in his 20's. This to me seemed too much as i stopped letting my mum see me naked the moment i hit puberty and we have always been very modest in out house (except when my sis was in labour lol ).

Im sorry if i sounded like i was accusing the card companies of advocating child abuse, that wasnt my intention, maybe a bit of over reacction. I certainly will be getting my child a secret valantines card when s/he is old enough to understand the fun, just like my mum did.

If you call that sick then its abit naive...sick is when someone abuses a child...not giving them a card on a day that is to tell people you care.....everything these days seems to be classed as child abuse its pathetic

I never used the work sick, just a bit creepy

ok creepy...i dont see anything creepy with it....not everyone thinks about sexual relations on valentines day

My mother sees me naked sometimes if I'm at her house and I'm getting changed. I'm not going to run and hide from my own mother. Vice versa if she's getting changed.

My dad, well I wouldn't like to have him see me naked, or vice versa, but then again my dad moved out when I was 6.

I don't think it's really a big deal to be honest. If they are comfortable with it, it's their choice. It's not as though they're doing anything that isn't done at a nudist camp, and IMO that's even weirder because that's with a bunch of strangers.

my MIL saw me half naked in labour so im not that bothered if she sees me in my bra and knickers now!! and i agree with cassi about the child abuse thing!!!

i like valentines day, if u dont then dont put a damper on everyone else who will b gettin even more lovin on feb 14th!!
