I have spoken to three in the last few days, all bloody useless.

I went and asked the first one about nicorette inhalators. It says on the box "If you are pregnant: Ask your doctor or phamacist before using". She said i should talk to my doctor. I tried to explain that my doctor has told me he wont see me til i am 6 weeks pregnant and that i would really quite like to smoke NOW (i promise i havent touched it since i found out i was pregnant) and she just shrugged. So i went to try another chemist down the road. The Pharmacist was 'busy'. Busy standing just round the corner chatting about the delivery boy, I could sodding well hear her! I waited for 20 minutes and then gave up.

Today I tried two more. For info about morning sickness. The first one said "We dont give advise at this stage in your pregnancy, there is too much that could go wrong". Oh, I'm sorry, did you not have any training after all then? What is that big sign above your head then that says "For Information and Advice Consult our Pharmacist"??? So i went to another accross the road. Who asked what my doctor had advised. I sighed loudly and the woman behind me said "Ginger root in hot water love. Trust me I've had 5 of them."

I've decided i will take her word for it and from now on not bother a pharmacist!

I'm sick of doctors and pharmacists saying "well, whatever you think is best". What do I know ffs! That's what professionals are meant to be for!

Starfish - have you maybe tried NHS direct or something like that? Or google Nicorette Inhalators and see if they have an FAQ page x

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • Nicotine in any form should ideally not be used during pregnancy, as it has been shown to adversely affect the development of the baby, both in the womb and after birth. However, for pregnant women who are unable to give up smoking without a smoking cessation aid, NRT may deliver less nicotine (and none of the other potentially disease-causing agents) than would be obtained from cigarettes. As a result it is considered that NRT poses less of a risk to the foetus than continuing to smoke. Pregnant women who smoke should discuss the risks and benefits of NRT with their doctor as early as possible in their pregnancy and only use this medicine on their advice. The aim should be to stop using NRT as soon as possible, preferably after two to three months.
  • Nicotine taken in any form passes into breast milk and is harmful to the nursing infant. However, for women who are unable to give up smoking without a smoking cessation aid, NRT may deliver less nicotine (and none of the other potentially disease-causing agents) than would be obtained from cigarettes. It is also less hazardous than the second-hand smoke that the infant would be exposed to if the mother continued to smoke. This medicine can therefore be used during breastfeeding. Wherever possible, the inhalator should be used immediately after breastfeeding and not in the two hours before breastfeeding, in order to reduce the amount of nicotine that the infant is exposed to.

i found ginger helped my sickness a little - i just used ginger tea bags though.

I really feel for those of you quitting smoking who still feel the urge to smoke - as soon as i got pregnant the smell of smoke made me feel sick! I cant belive the doctor wont see you until youre 6 weeks gone - cant you just book an appointment? There must be something they can give you x

Yes, I've actually just joined a new surgery today. I loved my old practice (i think i liked it so much because there is a two year waiting list just to join) but decided that now i am pregnant i should join one much closer to home. I have filled in all their forms and have to wait a couple of days for them to be processed before i can book an appointment, but then i am booking one for as soon as possible
