PCOS, too overweight for treatment??

right here is our story..

we are a same sex couple going through home insemination. my OH who is the one ttc is 23 and has been told one of her ovaries are pretty much normal.

her periods arnt exactly regular but have become much better in the last year.

basically what we are wanti ng help with is some advice regarding fertility help such as tablets etc?

my OH is a size 16 and is worried the docs will turn her away for metformin or anything else and is scared they will tell her she is overweight and deny her treatment.

has this happened to anyone before or have you got any advice or stories to help us build abit of confidence in our matter...

Just to let you know I got refused treatment as bmi is over 30, I'm a size 16 and 5ft 8 but classed as obese so won't treat until it is under 30 xxx

If your BMI is over 30 then you can be refused treatment on the NHS. I was a size 22 and 16 st 10 and went to the Dr with non existent periods. I was pretty much told until I lost the weight then it was most likely the factor in me not becoming pregnant. I ended up loosing 8 stone and low and behold still had trouble ttc. By then the story had all changed I was a perfect candidate for treatment etc. Had to laugh as I still also had the problems so weight clearly wasnt the issue.

Anyway this sounds negative it isnt meant to be. My story has the happiest ending as I got my mirical baby. What I was trying to write is that unfortunately the NHS can be quite scathing of being overweight so I would have your partner try to maybe loose enough to take her BMI down below 30 if she is above it. Go to the GP and set the ball rolling anyway as getting seen is important I think. You will get tests etc done and referred for some things. You will be able to get a plan in action but hopfeully you wont need it and you get your baby before any of this anyway!! Good Luck!

Do they refuse metaformin if you are over that BMI? I've heard some people say it helps them to loose the weight so seems odd that they wouldn't give that if nothing else until you are under the 30 point. I know my area of NHS won't do treatment such as IVF unless you are under 30BMI but it doesn't mention other types of treatment.

I am 12-14 pear shape and I don't even look overweight, I also go to the gym so I carry a lot of muse but they are obsessed with numbers at the nhs!

Metformin hasn't helped me lose weight at all, don't know why!

This sounds exactly like me! Size 12/14, don't look overweight (well I don't think I do haha!). BMI literally just over 30 on first appointment, lost 10lbs before next appointment 2mths later. Dr went really OTT/pleased with me but said now I've lost weight would like to see if helps me ov/have periods!

I've now been at clinic for 6 months and am finally starting clomid and pregnyl next month. So I honestly think and get impression from other ppl they purposely delay giving treatment to new patients, probably to see if they get preg on their own.

Oh, and metformin did nothing for me either, apart from make me feel constantly sick, but like a hunger sickness. So was taken off it cos pointless
