..if you see suggestions that make you cringe, is it better to point out why, in case the poster hasnt seen it that way?

Or is it a case of, if you cant say something nice, say nothing at all?

just wondered cos i feel mean if i post something negative!

Id say if someone was asking opinions they have to expect some negative comments along with the positive, then its up to them whether they take note or not.

If its just a general observation i wouldnt bother

This is always a tricky one - was the same on the wedding forum I used to be on when people asked for opinions on their dresses.

My view is, if you don't want an opinion then don't ask for one - i.e. don't say 'what do you think of my names?' say 'Have picked my names and I love them!'. If you ask for an opinion, don't get upset if people don't like your choices!

That being said, I think there are WAYS of saying you don't like something without being offensive. 'It wouldn't be my choice but go for it' is always better than 'It's a stupid name!'.

Sometimes the advice regarding names is really important I think - someone pointed out to me that one of our choices would have given our baby the initials SAC - something I wouldn't want but wouldn't have thought of!

(steps down from soapbox)

Its simple...if you don't want honest opinions then don't ask for them! :)

I must say if I see names on here that I think are hideous then I don't comment!!!!

Good thread though Liz! :)

You can guarantee there will be someone on here who'll now take offence at that :rotfl:

... which is why I never make comments!! Least said soonest mended :rotfl:

FWIW I actually quite like Temperance but then I called my daughter Constance which is from the same "old school" of naming your daughters after virtues like Grace and Faith and Patience...

However, I am 100% convinced it doesn't 'go' with Angel as a second name so I'm with Charlotte on the combination being awful. Especially because whatever the surname happened to be, it nearly always makes a word!!!

haha, yeah, probably. i just thought it was pretty rough because, well... it means: 'habitual moderation in the indulgence of a natural appetite or passion, esp. in the use of alcoholic liquors.' why would you want to associate that to a baby?!

i'll just go back under my rock now....

i am always honest but i try to put it nicely, i would usually say the name is "not my cup of tea" if i dont like it.

i quite like temperance  i wont name it MY baby though
