Does anybody know if it is possible to pay for these privately? I am 32 so don't think it would be offered routinely but as we already have two children I think I should have more tests than with my first, becuase of how having a disabled child would affect my other childrens lives.

I live in Hampshire.. anybody have any info?

Yes you can pay for these privately although they are done as routine during your 12 week scan if you give them permission to do it. We looked at a private one, £180 (were in Sussex) so decided to go with the NHS 12 week scan and include the NF scan with it....we had nothing to worry about, it's not (in my opinion unless you have specific worries about it) worth the high prices they charge but having it on the NHS gives you an extra 5 seconds of seeing baby on the screen - it literally is a 2 second thing to freeze frame a snapshot of the babies head then measure the fluid between the head and womb lining type thing. It will be offered to you, a private on is additional if you choose.

Thanks for advice. In hampshire we only get a 22 week scan.. I wish they offered 12 week ones! That's why I thought it might be worth it, extra peace of mind etc that all looks as it should. I think 22 weeks is way too late to see if all is well.

Good grief you don't get an earlier scan than 22 weeks? I'd be going crazy!! I know this sounds really really naughty but if you went up to A&E at the hospital, told them you were pregnant and experiencing cramping badly they would do an ultrasound for you then to check on the little one - my friend was only offered one scan and it's what she done. You can also book wellbeing packages with places like Baby Bond and similar, they will check measurements, positions and look to see that baby has everything baby needs etc and tell you the gender if you wanted to know that (must be 16+ weeks for that). I just can't believe you only get one scan. That's outrageous really!!
