I just wondered if anyone had any experience of taking the pill whilst breastfeeding? I went to see my dr today and she said that if I am exclusively breastfeeding I shouldn't need any contraception as you can't get pregnant. I was a bit dubious about this as I definitely don't want another baby yet. So she has put me on the mini pill, Micronor. How ever I have read that it can lower your milk supply? Is this true? Also I don't want to continuously bleed as when I was on a different type of mini pill this happened :(

I can't believe a doctor told you that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding! What absolute rubbish! You definitely can.

But anyway sorry, you might not continuously bleed especially since birth as your body is a bit different and adjusting etc. Hope you find the right way though!

You can't take the full pill as it decreases supply. The mini pill is fine. Breastfeeding usually delays periods returning, but definitely can't rely on that for contraception.

I had to read your post twice, I couldn't believe a doctor had given you that "advice"! Personally, I would be putting in a complaint if a GP said that to me, someone could end up unexpectedly pregnant because of their ignorance!

Oh, and I exclusively breastfed my oldest but my period came back at 9 weeks postpartum and stayed regular ever since. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens again this time. Definitely not a safe form of contraception!

I know, I had to insist that I wanted the pill off her to give it me. I have my check at 8 weeks at the doctor soon so I shall certainly tell him and my health visitor as they really should not be giving wrong advice out as like you said if people are getting pregnant again because of that it's not on x

It sounds to me that your doc is stuck in a different time zone, but these days we know girls can fall pregnant as EBF does not guarantee contraception unfortunately. But there is a point I started the minipil at 3 weeks pp and my milk quickly dried up after. So it worth waiting until your milk supply has atleast been built up properly before starting on the minipill just go and see the nurse x
