Nightfeeds Chat Thread

Stories of through the night are great, congratulations, even if it was short!

Poor you dotty, I find 4am the worst time. We've had a slightly better night than yesterday but still waking every 2 hours and hard to settle until 2am. X

Out of interest does anyone think my little one is comforting herself to some extent or is she just very hungry? She is 5 days old and waking st least every 40 minutes for food
! I gave her a bottle at 3 am as I was so sore from the constant feeding and even then she only went down for 50 minutes! I'm not complaining as we are taking steps in the right direction! Only reason I ask is she is just as pacified sucking someone's finger, attempts to suck her own fingers etc! She often remains on yhr breast despite the dirty chairs! The mw in hospital told me that babies do not use the boob for comfort?! Anyone agree:disagree! Have the mw coming today so might get a second opinion! During the day she will feed and then sleep for about 2-3 hours?! Xx

I have a very unsettled baby at night too!! She sleeps like a log through the day aswell but won't settle at night. Does this get better with age?

My mums here so helping out but she ended up holding her to sleep as she wouldn't sleep on her own yet is fine during the day!!

Dotty - hope you got some rest and violet isn't too poorly.

Fliss - how you finding the feeding now? I'm still topping up (but during the day she doesn't always want them) and still doing formula at night x

Also during the day she has a long feed off both breasts whereas at night she will feed off one for 20 minutes and then be fast asleep and refuse the second so I've been alternating them xx

Think I got about and hour and a half after last update so can't complain. Her breathing is sounding better this morning so that's a relief. Got to be at clinic for 10 this morning so going to have to wake little lady in a minute. Tum is feeling sore today. Wondering if I overdid it yesterday putting Vi in carrier and walking to the doctors (only a short walk up the road). :( xxx

I feel like I have stupid boobs!!! One moment they are full and provide loads, other times they "run out". I think this might be as J's requirement goes up, boob lags behind? Yesterday I did 2 small top ups of 1.5oz to placate her!
Is the combination feeding working well for you?

Lou, I was told they do comfort on the boob, but for the first 2-3weeks to let her, as it helps establish and inc milk supply.

Good luck today dotty. Yes I'd say baby slings and 3 week old c section scar is a bit much!!!

I definitely think babies do suck for comfort.. My baby still does this now at 5 months! In the early days though that suckling is sooo important to get your supply established, so just go with it as much as you possibly can. If sore squeeze out some breastmilk and let them air dry and it should help.. But unfortunate the first couple of week are the toughest and sorest, then eventually it just gets easier and completely pain free.

I constantly fed every 1-1 and a half hours day and night in the early weeks, then eventually he started going 2-3 hours at night but still the same in the day. It just takes them a little while to know day from night but it will come hun xxx

Thanks Claire she did 6 poos yesterday and already done two today a well bles her! In one end and out the other! Here's me thinking breastfed babies poo less lol xx

It's so hard to know how much they get with bf - doesn't sound like you need to top up much though!!

Combi feeding seems to be ok, I feel like I'm doing a mish mash of stuff!! Breast feeding well in day and she's not really wanted top ups. The breast support lady said I should try to put her on at least once in night. She put on 120g in 3 days so just 10g off birth weight and isn't have tons of formula. Hoping we have turned the corner now :)

Don't say that about slings ha ha as I've got my friend sending me one to try :) x

Laura that's great on the weight gain front!! J has only put on 15g In 2 days again. They've told me to pump 6 times a day for 3 days and top her up with formula. My fenugreek should be arriving soon too :)

I'm sure the sling would be fine pottering around the house, I was more picturing dotty rushing around in it to docs!

Girls, I would like some opinions please.

Freddie has done midnight - 6am from about 3 weeks. He is now getting very tired in the evenings, so we have a bedtime routine around 8pm (although I am bringing it forward to 7pm as he seems to want to go down then). I then dreamfeed at around 11-11.30pm. For the last week he has been waking at 3am on the dot seemingly wanting a feed - he has done this regardless of how much he has taken at his dreamfeed (varies between 2 and 4oz depending on how much I can get down him!). Now I can placate him with a dummy for nearly an hour - do you think this means he is not waking through hunger? He is 8 weeks old on Friday and obviously I know he is capable of sleeping through because he has done it!

Well she got weighed today at 5 days and she has put on 6 ounces and she has only had 5 top ups since leaving the hospital so it is pretty much all breastmilk, she obviously didn't get the memo about losing weight! Mw didn't se concerned and just told me to carry on with what I was doing xx

Gemsy - sounds like it could be a growth spurt. We've had really annoying changes in Jakes sleeping habits for weeks now - no night is ever the same!! X

Gemsy, does sound like he's hungry, but I have no experience!!!

Lou, that's amazing weight gain for your LO, well done!

Thanks Hun I was a bit worried as never heard of babies putting on that much before but she said you can't overfeed on breastmilk and the one top up a day wouldn't be causing it so just go with the flow a d see what happens :) x

I am hoping it is a growth spurt and that would explain why my lovely baby has turned into a little shit today!! lol Nothing made him happy today!!

Wishing everyone on here a peaceful night! My lo is having a growth spurt too and cannot decide whether he want to feed or not so has been cluster feeding since 8 (yawn) hopefully he tanks up and sleeps a bit longer... If he ever falls asleep (bigger yawn)...
Have been trying to sing lullabys to him but he is not impressed... Nor is my oh who says I sound like a cat being strangled :-) xx

Think I'm in for a long night - Emily is wide awake and won't go down on her own. She settles fine in the day but is like a different baby at night. Even when fully fed and winded she won't sleep in her own.

I guess this is usual for her age as she doesn't know the difference between night and day. It's so hard having no sleep though x

Me too ld- tried putting lo in cot earlier than usual - she sleeps with us in pram in living room usually but I swear she associates the cot with waking up to feed as the most she ever sleeps in it is 50 minutes! Debating whether to try and find a cheap Moses basket and see if that helps but at 5 days old and already 9 pound 10 and being a long baby I don't think she would fit for long so we will perservere! She is definitely a night owl though! Goes 2-3 hours without a feed in day whilst sleeping in between and at night wants feeding every 40 minutes or so! At least I got 4 hours sleep earlier ( in two chunks of 2 hours) so I'm not completely running on empty! Good luck, hope we all get a little sleep at least xx

My lo is constantly a little shot lately - sleep cry feed cry naked bum for 10 minutes and smiles... Cry. Cry cry cry!!

Up for feed no 1, 4.5 hrs after bed time. If he's back to routine he'll be up again in another 2.5-3 hours but this has felt like a short feed so we shall see....
