Hi all,

This still seems funny to be to be talking about this because I am only 16 weeks and haven't bought anything yet but I am just starting to think about what we need.

I am starting to get a bit overwhelmed with it all to be honest! Anyway, one of the things I am stuck with is what to buy for the baby to sleep in during the first few weeks. I was going to get a Moses basket mainly because I really like them and they are portable so I can put the baby to sleep downstairs as well during the day time.

But I know lots of people buy Next to Me cribs. However, they seem quite expensive. I am not sure what the best option is and just wanted to get the opinion of anyone who has done this before because quite clearly, I am a first time mum-to-be!

Thanks!

We did moses basket upstairs and carry cot bit of the pram for downstairs. Worked for us and will be doing the same this time. I have heard good things about next to me cribs, but if I were you I'd hold off on that till baby arrives and see how you get on with the moses basket first. You might find they are fine in it and you'll be thankful you saved the money. On the other hand, you can order one and have it in a couple of days if you think it would work for you and your baby once they're here. Top tip re: moses basket. Put a hot water bottle in while feeding baby. You might think it looks all nice and cosy with blankets, etc but it will be a lot cooler than your nice warm body. Hot water bottle will help to keep moses basket nice and snug for when you put them in it (take it out before you put baby in, obviously).

Also, just to add, some of it depends on the size of your baby. Big babies tend to outgrow moses baskets pretty quickly, so some people go for a next to me type thing for a big more space until they're ready for going into a cot. This is something you won't really be able to judge till your baby is here. We had a small one who went straight into his cot in his own room once he got too big for his moses basket.

My first baby hated the moses basket and slept in his snuzpod (as you say they are expensive but I was given it by my sister). In the day downstairs he slept on a baby beanbag or swing. I also lay him on the sofa on a blanket as he got bigger whilst I was in the same room. I also had a swinging crib(- again given to me) that he would sleep in. I think it's a good idea to see if your baby likes it. X

Thank you! That's really helpful! I guess it's just one of those things where you don't really know what the baby is going to like until it arrives. I feel like I am learning so much!

We've always had crib for bedroom (then cotbed from 6m) and chair for downstairs (or even just a rug on the floor - it was new carpet when I had my last baby tough lol)

Was looking at Sleepygead but they are expensive considering baby won't use it for long?

God yes, those sleepyheads are so expensive aren't they?

Aldi have got a baby event coming up in a couple of weeks and I've heard they are doing a sleepyhead style pod for £30 so I'll be checking that out! Saying that we've bought a snuzpod for upstairs as they get great reviews and are bigger than a Moses basket. I've also seen people take the side off and use them as a little seat for the nursery afterwards

I'm on baby number 5 :) always had a Moses basket, one upstairs and one downstairs is easier , (or the pram downstairs) depends how much room you have aswel. We have thought about next to you crib for upstairs aswel, but probably just use a basket. No need for a cot or much furniture , until after baby is here, unless your getting a nursery ready. We obviously don't have a room for baby to go In! He/she will be sharing, so no nursery to prepare here. That's the magical part about first babies , or even second too. After that they usually just share! Haha. :)

I had moses basket with DD. For the first few weeks it was next to my bed then I sat it in the cot before eventually removing it so she was in the cot. She slept through by 10 weeks old.

My daughter had a Moses basket, she hated it so ended up in bed with me from 9 weeks. This time we still have Moses basket so going to use that for downstairs and have bought a next to me crib for upstairs. We mostly have everything from my first so didn't feel too bad about the price of buying one! x

That's helpful, thanks everyone! I think I will get a moses basket for now and see how we get on with it. If it's a real struggle then I will look at next to me cribs, but don't want to splash out just yet if it turns out baby is happy in the moses basket.

We recently moved so have a 3 bedroom house and will be getting the nursery ready before baby arrives anyway :)

I co slept with my baby for 9 months. Want to avoid that this time due to hips not coping well so am going to bed a next to me crib. My daughter could never be moved one breastfed so she's wake up so hoping the next one can be put into crib without waking!!

My baby grew out her moses by like 6 weeks! Mainly because she liked to sleep with her arms up and out and it stopped her lol! We then put the cot in our room until she turned 6 months. We got the next to me crib but I didn't like how she used to squish her nose up against the solid side I'd get paranoid she wouldn't be able to breathe ok ..she couldnt do that in the moses as was less room . Next time I'll prob go moses again for at first xx

Neither of mine would sleep in a Moses basket. Downstairs they sleep in a bouncer chair and upstairs we have a next to me. Moses baskets don't last til 6 months so it's worth thinking about what you'll do when baby has outgrown it if you want baby in your room until 6 months x

I didn't bother with a Moses basket, I bought a second hand John Lewis Anna swinging crib (new mattress) and used that upstairs until my daughter went in her cotbed at 5 months. I had a Chicco bouncer downstairs that could lay flat, or used the carry cot of the Pram. I've kept everything so plan to do the same this time:

I'm not sure how long we will leave it before the baby goes in its own room to be honest. Not really thought about it. However the nursery is literally right next to us so it wouldn't be far away!

It's recommended to keep baby in with you as long as possible as your breathing triggers their breathing instinct so helps reduce SIDS.

We previously had a cot which we took the side off and had up against our bed as they were the same size so worked as a cheap version of a Next To Me, but we had to get a new frame before DS2 which means we couldn't do this with him. We had his cot right up against our bed again but having the bars there contributed towards my difficulties bonding with him. There were other factors but this didn't help either as it was very difficult to get to him quickly in the middle of the night.

This time, we have a Next To Me as for me the money is worth it to have access to DS3 whenever I need it, so it helps towards that bond.

We had a moses basket, I had a stand in the living room and then another in the bedroom at night. I guess it just depends on personal preference. I never had the intention of co sleping which is why I didn't opt for a next to me crib but I can totally see why people use them.

I think my daughter was 8 months when she went into her own room.
