Hi guys! My mw has sent me some emails (names removed obv) she's received from ladies who practised natal hypnotherapy. Thought I'd pass them on for anyone who is interested. Bear with me whilst I copy them (I have permission).
Hi - you may remember coming to my house back in November, to take us through the Natal Hypnotherapy course...
Been meaning to get back to you to let you know how it all went, but have just managed to catch a moment now, five and a half weeks later! I also wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us, and let you know that you really helped me to have an amazing birth experience.
After you left us, I made sure that I listened to the CD regularly. We made a birth plan and had everything ready around us - including a deflated birthing pool in the dining room - for weeks beforehand! The baby was due on the 13th December, but when that date came and passed, I began to lose hope that he would arrive at all. Still, I stayed calm - if not slightly frustrated and bored - and continued with the CD and a variety of things I hoped would bring on the labour.
On the 17th December, while shopping in Newcastle, I "ran" - in the way only a 40 week pregnant woman could - up a flight of stairs in Waterstones, only to find, when I reached the top, that my waters had broken. Not dramatically, but I was fairly sure that was what it was. I insisted on completing my Christmas shopping and didnt arrive home til three hours later.
The contractions didnt start til nine o clock - although, on reflection, I think I'd been having them all day - but they were barely noticeable. Between nine and ten, I was still able to move about freely and I used some movements from a pregnancy yoga class to relieve the aching. I also had the TENS machine on.
The room was lovely - we had candles and lava lamps and relaxing music. The whole family were there - although only my mam and aunty were in the room with me during the labour and birth
At about ten thirty, it got a bit more intense and I phoned the midwife and got in the pool. It was the first night of the snow and it took her 45 minutes to get through. When she examined me, I was 7 cm. It was fairly intense from then onwards, and it was from then that I really began to use the hypnotherapy techniques. My mam and aunty were both amazing throughout - talking me through when I needed it, using the 3,2,1 relax, reminding me of the visualisations. I found that the best thing for me was turning down the dial and the 3,2,1 relax. My aunty also kept telling me that the water contained a painkiller and I really started to believe it and it really worked. I barely used the gas and air - although did quite enjoy chewing the mouthpiece! I won't say that it wasn't intensely uncomfortable, but I don't remember it ever being unmanageable. Apparently I made no noise during contraction - I really did go into the "zone" - and the midwives were very respectful of this.
******* was born at 2.55am - about 6 hours after the first contraction. I didnt need any stitches - one of my biggest worries! He was 8 lb 9oz and gorgeous! And still is - despite the fact that I am permanently knackered.
Anyway, I really do feel that this wonderful birth experience was made possible by you and the Natal Hypnotherapy programme. I approached the experience feeling calm and ready and really, it couldnt possibly have gone any better! Thank you so much for helping me achieve the birth I really wanted!
Hope you are well -
I have been telling all my friends - pregnant and not - about the hypnotherapy
