We've been discussing this for ages in our house. I've read a lot about how resuable are just as bad for the environment due to constant water usage for washing and all the chemicals used to clean them etc.

So we have decided to get some of both types and see how we get on. I also bought the nappy disposal system for the nursery thing off Amazon (it hasnt come yet) but I'm hoping it will make it very easy and smell free!

I'm using reusable ones for the following reasons:

cost - once you have them you have them and can use them on any subsequent babies. Will save money on buying thousands of disposables and you don't have to worry about how many nappies you have left.

environment - sure it means more washing but with a baby i'm imagining that doing a load a day is the norm - the chemicals are just steriliser which isn't much worse than normal softner and powder, plus if you wash at 60 it will sterilise anyway. Also it saves sending lots of nappies to landfill to take however long to degrade.

Don't get me wrong I'm far from being a hippy, they just seem to make sense for us. we will still be using disposables at first for the icky sticky poo and when we're out and about or on holiday. I just can't imagine spending £15(?) a week on something that will be poo'd on and thrown in the bin - thats valuable wine money!

we are going to give the reusable a go........btw NCT are offering up to 40% off theirs at the moment until oct 14th.
We are going to go for the ones that will do baby right up until potty training. they expand as the baby grows.
But, will be using disposables for the few days. Will have so much to get used to, Im not going to want to start trying to handle reusables as well lol

A friend is giving me a load of resuable nappies, do you think there would be any hygiene problem with that? She said they only used them for a couple of months as it turned out to be so much hard work, but I would like to give it a try.

Mind you, good tip about not trying it for the first couple of weeks! Maybe I will start with disposable then move on to reusable when I'm more confident

Yeh Ive bought a couple of boxes of nappies cos tmi but babys poo the first couple of times is like tar and its tummy has to get used to milk so its poo can be a bit unpredictable, so I was advised to use disposables until baby and us are ready lol

We r going with disposable for the following reasons

We have no tumble dryer and no room for one so being a winter baby will struggle to get them dry

Easier when out and about

Personal preference

I really think it depends what works best for you and baby x x x

Old reusables are meant to better than new ones. They are more absorbent.
We are using disposables because of the same reasons as MrsMc and lack of space. Also watched my mum use them with my brother and looks like a lot of hard work. When baby gets a bit bigger we will move onto Eco friendly nappies (another option for you!)

I'm planning on using disposables when we are out and reusables when at home (with nappy liners to catch the poop) xxxxxxxx
