My friend at work has been referred to a specialist hospital in london today. She was scanned yesterday (I'm not totally sure how far along she is) and the neck measurement was 8 when it should be 2 (????) and there's a lot of fluid around the baby's head. I am wondering what this means for her, she is 38 and is very very scared. I can't get hold of her at the moment but just wondered if anyone has any idea what this could mean?
I am worried about asking her anything cos I don't want to upset her without knowing what she could be dealing with and not knowing what to say. She's been told she is too far gone for a termination :(
Thanks ladies xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi ladies
Just to let you know they are 95% sure her baby is Down's. She has to get the other test results on friday :(
Thanks for all your thoughts and the information xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry hun I dont know what it means but I really hope everything will be okay for her. In my thoughts x

When I had my 12 week scan, my obs said the babys neck measurement was very thin meaning that we were very low risk for downs?

Maybe it means that she could be high risk for Downs or Edwards Syndrome?

Found this online...

A nuchal scan is a sonographic prenatal screening scan (ultrasound) to help identify higher risks of chromosomal defects including Down's syndrome in a fetus, particularly for older women who have higher risks of such pregnancies. High thickness measurements are also associated with congenital heart defect.[1] The scan is carried out at 11–13.6 weeks pregnancy and assesses the amount of fluid behind the neck of the fetus - also known as the nuchal fold or the nuchal translucency. Fetuses at risk of Down's Syndrome tend to have a higher amount of fluid around the neck. The scan may also help confirm both the accuracy of the pregnancy dates and the fetal viability. Its high definition imaging may also detect other less common chromosomal abnormalities.[

Other chromosomal defects
Other chromosomal defects that cause a thicker nuchal translucency are
[edit] Other defects with normal karyotype

In fetuses with a normal number of chromosomes, a thicker nuchal translucency is associated with other fetal defects and genetic syndromes.[6]

Normal thickness depends on the crown-rump length (CRL) of the fetus. Among those fetuses whose nuchal translucency exceeds the normal values, there is a relatively high risk of significant abnormality.

I hope your friend and her baby are ok hun xxx

I did wonder about Down's. Thanks for the info and your thoughts xxxxxxxxxxx

We had a measurement of 4.5mm which increased the risk to 1:45. I'm 22. We were reffered for a CVS test, which is where they stick a needle in your stomach and test the fluid. (She will also get offered an Amnio which is pretty much the same just is at a leter stage) Alls ok now tho :) we found the sex out ealy and have a healthy boy, we were also reffered for extra heart scans as this can also hightlight a heart problem, but again all is ok :)

With my first baby i was told it looked like my baby had either Turners, Patoe or Down syndrome so we had an amniocentisis it was a long wait for the results but everything was ok- that was nearly 12 years ago now!! I can remember it like it was yest. Hope everything is ok.

I have no idea what that means, sorry, but I hope everything's OK. Hugs :hugs: x

Babybrain, what happened with your friend? I was given a 1:2 chance yesterday and feeling horrible today!!!! X

I'm not too sure hope tbh, she has been off work since. The thing is the neck measurement was so high at 8 that it was obvious something was wrong now I've researched it. But I do know that she has been offered a termination after all and is considering it xxxxxxxxxx

ah bless her x i hope she is ok x must be awful making such a tough heartbreaking desicion xxx

Oh poor thing, this must be such a tough decision to make. x

I just can't imagine it tbh. After all this I was petrified when they measured my baby's neck yesterday, it's 1.3 luckily but I was in tears at the thought of it. She's strong and at least any decision will be her own xxxxxxxxx

Hope your friend is ok Babybrain! Been thinking about her! Xxxx

Aaaww thank you hope. The baby was terminated 2 weeks ago and she's had a horrific time with it but she's determined to try again when she's ready bless her xxxxxxxxxxxx

ah i wish her all the best x must of been a heartbreaking desicion but one many of us would make given the choice x x x

Ah bless her!
Give her hugs from us all... And tell her to join! Helps no end! Xxxx
