money saving

You know what, after all that, I just did the calculation bit finally and we're not entitled to anything either. Sometimes I think we'd be better off it we quit our jobs! xx

Oh ta, I'll have a read through when I get a mo, although I suspect I won't be entitled to anything. I've never claimed anything in my life so don't have a clue where to start with this sort of thing............

Me neither hun! Although if I find out we can get anything at all I'll go for it! It's not looking that way though. I thought everyone got something, I can't remember what it's called, when they had a child.xx

child benefit is for everyone with a child
tax credits depend on income.

me and my OH may be eligible for some tax credits, just have to find our p60's and with rough estimates of our yearly basic salary were entitled to working tax credits of like 2 grand a year!

Cheers Bev, that's good to know. I knew there was something but didn't know what it was called! x

spot on laura!! i done the caluclator if i didn't go back to work and it would mean we would get £350 per month tax credits.

if i work 3 days a week i'm gonna take home just over 1k but will be paying £600 per month in childcare!!!! so basically i'm £50 PER MONTH better off for working - ridiculous!! i dont want to leave my job though so i'll do it but its just gutting! xxx

Pos with things like this would you use ur basic or what you actually get? My OHs basic is 24 (I think!) bit with all the overtime he can earn double or even triple his basic, but that money isn't guaranteed? I get confused when trying to work everything our because of this!

i 'think' its on your basic as the rest isn't guaranteed. my OH works overtime most saturdays and i didn't add this on, i just put his basic xx

Well I got told I'm being made redundant at end of year so hopefully we will qualify while I'm off with lo before returning to a job! X

They want to know any previous yr earnings and current year then ask for average in terms of bonus etc or you get penalised following year and can end up owing them money.

ladies, i'm so confused by all this, haha. I know we wont be entitiled to anything as i wont be working once baby arrives and OH's income is £45k but hes self employed ( i know that can complicate things)

But anyone know if we will still get the child benefit bit? and how much that is? bev did you say everyone gets this? or is it income assessed?

Questions questions! :)

as far as im aware child benefit is one basic rate to everyone with a child under 16.

Child Benefit – do you qualify?

dg_077894.jpg

You normally qualify for Child Benefit if you have children under 16 (or under 20 if in certain types of education or training) and you live in the UK.

Who is eligible?

You may be able to get Child Benefit if your child is:
  • aged under 16
  • over 16 but under 20 - and is in education or training that counts for Child Benefit
  • under 18 and has recently left education or training - but they must have registered for work, education or training with a careers service, Connexions, Ministry of Defence or similar

What is Child Benefit?

dg_077126.jpg

Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that you can claim for your child. It is usually paid every four weeks but can sometimes be paid weekly. There are separate rates payable for each child. The payment can be claimed by anyone who qualifies, whatever their income or savings.
Who can get Child Benefit?

If you're responsible for a child, you can normally get Child Benefit for them - even if you're not their parent.

You can get Child Benefit even if your child doesn't live with you, as long as:
  • you pay towards their upkeep
  • what you pay is at least the same as the amount of Child Benefit
  • the person your child lives with is not getting Child Benefit for them
If you and another person both claim Child Benefit for the same child, only one of you can get it.
Child Benefit payments usually stop when your child reaches 16, unless they are in education or training that counts for Child Benefit. For example, an advanced course at higher education level - such as a degree - doesn't count.

You can't get Child Benefit for your child once they reach the age of 20.
How much Child Benefit will you get?

There are two separate amounts, with a higher amount for your eldest (or only) child. You get £20.30 a week for your eldest child and £13.40 a week for each of your other children.
