Excuse if this is a long one, really want to write it all down somewhere so I don't forget what happened!
I had a sweep on Monday 22nd in the afternoon and began having bloody show almost straight away. I really didn't want to get my hopes up as I had been down to triage twice before thinking labour was beginning and was told I was only 1 - 2 cms dilated.
Tuesday arrives and OH and I are getting a bit fed up of the constant calls of 'is baby here' so decide to go out for dinner and see a film. During the film, really strong period like cramps begin but again, I didn't want to think that anything was happening.
Couldn't settle on Tuesday night and ended up sitting on the sofa watching TV when POP! at 3.20am my waters went! Mad dash from hubby and I to get down to Triage, meanwhile contractions (oh my god did I notice the difference!!) started thick and fast with only 3 mins inbetween. Got to Birthing Centre and was examined and told I was 4cm!! Yay!! Bounced on ball, had some painkillers and before getting in pool I was examined again and told I was 6cm. So happy with myself that I was coping and began on gas and air while floating about in the pool.
4hrs later, examined again and was STILL 6cm. This is where everything went a bit wrong. Told I had to go up to labour ward and be put on the drip. This totally threw my mind set and requested an epidural as I wasn't as focused and calm as I was in the birthing centre. Epi didn't work! Took 2 boosters before any pain relief took effect and even then I could still feel the peak of the contractions. Another booster and this took the pain away, I was still able to move my legs and turn on my side which I really appreciated.
After my next examination (only at 7cms by this point) baby's heart rate dropped dramatically, emergency buzzer pressed and room filled with people. Clip placed on baby's head, lots of pushing on my bump to try and get an accurate reading of the heart rate. Only way to keep it at a semi-good rate was for me to lie on my right side. Was told if his heart beat didn't pick up in 30 minutes then blood test would need to be done and decisions made about delivery. Luckily he improved enough for me to continue on with labour.
The next part is a bit of a blur, I know OH popped out to get something and when he came back I was on oxygen with a BP of 80/40. Given medications to get my blood pressure back up and had to drink energy drinks, finally it slowly began to rise again.
FINALLY told I was at 10cm and ready to push. When I turned on my back to do this, it was like my epi had worn off and all the pain was in my back. I was trying to push through it but it was difficult as I felt I couldn't focus on pushing into my bottom. Had another 2 boosters of epi and this helped but I was too late and told that they would be taking me to theatre to have a forceps delivery.
Spinal given so was completely numb from chest down. Two big pulls and my baby boy, Michael John, came into the world at 1843 on 24/10/12 weighing 9lbs 12oz and 53cms long! Just over 15 hours since my waters went. Suffered a 3rd degree tear so stitching took an hour while OH and baby stayed together.
Couldn't love him more!!
