Evening All,

This issue has been playing on my mind for about 2 months now. I kept putting it down to teething or illnesses but I don't think it is that.

Basically, my little boy who is about 7.5 months, is refusing to eat meat/savoury foods. He'll eat endless amounts of fruit puree/puddings, yoghurt, carrot puffs and rice cake. So, I introduced veg puree at the same time and he was fine - loved it in fact. Then, all of a sudden about 2 months ago meal times have become a battle.

It ranges from:
- Refusing to eat the vegetable puree
- Refusing to eat the vegetable puree he ate a few days earlier/or refusing to eat it when mixed with pureed meat.
- Refuses to eat any meat/savoury jar/pouch and has even refused my own homemade meat dishes.

When I say refuse, I mean he screams as soon as it goes in his mouth and then continues until it vanishes, yet he'll eat pretty much anything else.

It's really ruining the joy of weaning - is this likely to be a phase? could it be linked to teething? (He has no teeth at the moment that I can see...). I'm just really concerned he'll become a fussy eater.

Granted, he has been poorly in recent weeks: cold, chest infection and then vomiting/runs tummy bug. But this started before he was poorly and doesn't seem to have improved as he's got better.

Any advice welcome!

We did start weaning early with our son and by that age he was having a combination of purees and finger foods he could feed himself. I've seen a lot of ladies on here mention their babies get a bit fussy about feeding themselves and wanting to experiment with their food more from about this age.

Have you tried the Ella pouches that are fruit and veg mixed?? Might be good way to gradually get him back on pure veg purée xx

What about baby led weaning?
Where you just let them pick up whatever finger foods themselves to gnaw on and get through?
No puree
They just eat it themselves and see how they get on
Maybe hes not quite ready x

I would also suggest giving baby led weaning a go of he's not responding well to purées. Best of luck x

Babies just prefer sweet things, it's in their nature. I did baby led weaning with my daughter, she's now 2 and still will only rarely eat savoury food. I've always offered her a huge variety but let her eat what she wants and never force anything. She doesn't like eating anyway so any pressure would tip her over the edge!! This week she has FINALLY eaten some potato and enjoyed it! The only veg she will eat are peas and sweetcorn unless it's hidden in cooked food. For the first year after weaning she basically survived on fruit and pasta!

Omgosh.. I have gone through so many difficult times with my boy during weaning. we weaned early, by 6 months he was wolfing down 3 meals a day plus snacks.. then he decided he didn't want to be fed anymore for 2 weeks.. then he decided he wanted to only be spoon fed.. then he decided he would only eat his meal if he had a carrot puff to munch on during the whole process.. then he went off food completely.. then he refused breakfast (nearly 4 months on still hates breakfast) I try everything! eventually I find something he'll eat.
yes lots goes to waste.. and each problem takes me about a week to work out! lol

at the mo he's refusing family meals and will only eat baby jars! with something in his hand.

First year is about learning rather than what they eat. They go through so many different stages/emotions etc.. I wouldn't worry, carry on what your doing and always offer him what you feel like you want him to eat.. meat etc.. then give him what he will only eat.. eventually he'll take to it again.

I'm going thorugh the same thing atm. My DD doesn't like any thing plain. Only like sweet thing these day. So I mix the sweet thing (fruit etc) and plain food (rice) together. I managed to fool her! I also tried one spoon fruit and one spoon rice/meat. She is fooled too. Haha!

I hate weaning! Lol my lo has been challenging too! I feel he's just turning a corner now at nearly 1 but am constantly stressed about what he's eating or not eating! Funnily enough he used to adore fruit but now refuses it ..except strawberries...loves to suck a strawberry! At the moment he screams as soon as I put him in his highchair! Last week he was spitting everything out.... The joys! X
