Your employers can ask you to repay any maternity pay that you received over and above the rate of Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) You need to check your contract of employment.
One way round it is how much annual leave you have and if you take that at the end of your maternity leave, any annual leave you take can be classed as 'returning to work'.
