Maternity leave....

I was paid off at the council due to ill health. I have had two back operations and was still in agony and because I worked on a care setting it was no longer any good for me. I was retired due to ill health. That's when my parents asked me to come work here. X

yeah my son is the only grandson until this one comes along, she has 6 granddaughters so he is like the flaming chosen one lol I am the same I want my mum to enjoy it but as a grandma, I have the exact argument with my partner about his mum. He has a daughter from a prev relationship and due to his shifts his mum pretty much raised his daughter, but now I am here she is so off with me all the time and is obsessed with his daughter to the point that he is terrified of saying anything to her, and now I don't really want her to have anything to do with our son!!

The problem you have from what you say (and am sorry you were paid off cause of ill health I hope you are ok now), is that it sounds like your parents 'did you a favour' to give you a job, but you just have to sometimes stop and say look, I love you but this is my family, my kids, my baby, I want to spend time with them, bond with them, as I should being the mum and as your parents you would hope they would fully respect that!

I hope you can get something sorted, as I say maybe WFH one day a week or take the baby to the office, try using that as a compromise for more time? xx

I had a word with them yesterday.

I'm gonna take four months off, they gonna pay me for two and we will manage for 2 months on stat pay, hubby can get 26 weeks shared paternity but obviously he wants me to have as much time off as possible to bond with our baby and recover from major surgery.

Still not ideal but better than 8 weeks. Hubby will have the last two months off fully paid.

I still feel sad about it all and will miss her so much but just got to go with it. I will be working 28 hours when I come back so hopefully do it over a three day week.

Thanks for your replies x

They are hardly 'paying you' as the first 6 weeks of SMP is 90% of your salary so they will only be paying out of the business 10% of your wage for 6 weeks and then 2 weeks of full salary. They reclaim the SMP from the government.

I'm so sorry your parents aren't more understanding. Mine are the complete opposite and would do anything they could to help us. Xx

Glad you can take a bit longer at least xx
