I am so pleased to say I really really enjoyed my whole labour and birth, it truly was amazing and totally not what I expected in a good way!

Background - due date 24/1/13 first baby, I expected to go overdue and in labour for a few days as I had very few signs baby was trying to make an exit.

7am on 12/1/13 hubbie went off for a days sailing with his friend in London (90 mins drive) Left me sleeping in bed!

9am - I woke up and felt back a bit achey. Put the Hoover around had a shower and did some washing of baby clothes!

10.30am felt back tightening and stomach cramps. Thought braxton hicks as they were mild but coming fairly regularly. But hadn't had braxton hicks before so wasn't sure. Downloaded an app for contractions to see if they were regular!

11.30 after timing for an hour the braxton hicks were coming every 5-10 mins lasting for about 40 secs. Pains manageable with breathing but not able to walk through them. Tried wheat bag on back and kept on all fours or leaning forward on the windowsill!

12.00 phoned hospital and told to wait it out till they were a full minute every 3-5 mins

12.30 pains which I still thought we're braxton hicks coming every 3-4 mins but still only 45 secs max and some were 20 secs. Spoke to mum who told me to ring hubbie and get a friend to keep me company. I was convinced this was not labour yet and if it was it was going to be like this for days! Told hubbie that something was happening but could be false start. he was due to go offshore until dark now and therefore uncontactable until after dark. Rung friend whom was happy to come around and keep me company!

13.45 friend arrived whom was ace, ran me a bath and kept me talking in between contractions. Bath didn't help and pains were getting quite intense by this stage but still only 45 secs max and 3-5 mins.

15.15 phoned hospital and told them I couldn't cope with the pains and that I needed some pain relief they warned me that if I wasn't in established labour that I would be sent home. So I was fully expecting to be sent home! Friend took me to hospital.

15.40 arrived at midwife led unit and examined immediately....4cm dilated. Asked for pain relief and given paracetamol and codeine. Told I wouldn't be examined for another 4 hours. Friend phoned hubbie for me to update him and tell him to get himself straight to hospital after sailing. I knew at this point he was not going to answer as he wasn't planning to be back onshore until dusk. I was suprised to be informed that their boat had broken and he was just packing up and due to set off soon. This was a very lucky boat break!

16.50 waters went and by god there was lots! Just after this I buzzed the midwife to say I wasn't coping with the pain. She said I could try gas and air but she was reluctant to give me this at this stage as " you still have a way to go". Had the gas and air which helped a bit but more helped me focus on my breathing.

17.00 buzzed midwife again as the contractions were back to back and I was getting no rest in between. I had decided that if she thought I still had a way to go I wanted epidural. Midwife agreed to examine me and discovered I was 7cm! She asked me if I still wished for an epidural and I said yes as I thought I was going to be long time before the pushing stage..... Looking back I had no awareness of time and the fact it was going really quickly and didn't realise I had moved 3cm in 80 minutes.....

So midwife called the anaethestist and she was on her way!

17.10 my husband arrived! I was very glad to see him but wasn't able to talk to him at all by this point.

17.15 midwife asked me to read the epidural information. I was really struggling to read more than as few words at a time due to the contractions. I got halfway through the information leaflet and felt as though I needed a very large bowel movement. I was convinced it was a bowel movement but in fact I was told it was babies head! Midwife guided and encouraged me to go with my feeling and push when I felt I needed to. I was scared of pushing to start as I thought I wasn't dilated enough. But once I got into it I realised that it was bringing me lots of relief. I did away with the gas and air by this point as I actually didn't need it....

18.13 hrs Baby Luca John was born! Such a perfect boy weighing 7lbs4. I did have a small tear which required stitches - midwife said this was because he came out with his hand on his cheek!

It was such an amazing time! Hope I haven't waffled too much! I was so lucky my husbands boat broke and he made it back in time! Also very lucky that I had a wonderful friend whom was not planning to be my labour partner. She did an amazing job at keeping me calm!

learning point for me was - contractions don't have to last a full minute to be in established labour. And I best get to hospital quickly next time!
