I don't really know whether I should be posting in here, nor how to phrase it, so please bear with me.
I have been referred for a scan by my GP after several months of very specific right sided pain, which has gradually gotten worse (along with a abrupt change of period pain, and now abnormal cycles and non/very late/early ovulation). The last week has been quite horrific, but has now eased since I started bleeding this morning. I assume my ovary is causing the pain, because of the location, but it's just a guess (feels like a hot poker, very sharp, and always in the same place every few minutes).

My GP has mentioned both possibly cysts and endometriosis, but of course this is just speculation currently. Is there a specific name for the scan I have been referred for, if they're unsure what they're looking for?

I want to know the length of time I can expect to wait for the referral letter/date if anyone can give me some guidance?

GP told me there is a possibility I could be waiting until Feb due to the time of year, so I want to look for private alternatives as well (but don't really know what I'm looking for hence this post!).

Any advice or guidance is very, very welcomed.

Hiya,

It will most likely be an internal and external ultrasound to start with. Then if they can't see any issues on those you may get referred for other tests.

I had to wait about 6 weeks for an ultrasound date (was also over this time of year).

They scanned my kidneys, ovaries and uterus on my first investigative scan.

Six weeks? :( did you receive the letter fairly quickly? I'm not sure why that's important to me, I guess just because it's in hand and I know I'm waiting on the date. I'm hoping if I call them once getting the letter I may be able to move the date forward somehow.

I suppose going privately is pointless when it comes down to it - if I needed further treatment I wouldn't be able to afford it.

I paid for a private scan whilst waiting for my NHS one, I was in horrific pain and had to know why. It was £99. She told me to still go for the NHS one as they would need it documented from them for gynae services etc and she also said its good to have the scans at different times in the cycle to compare. I could have waited really as going private didn't achieve anything apart from give me my answer a month earlier but I am glad I did it as was driving myself mad xx

I would happily pay a hundred, that's nothing really. I still don't know who to go to or what to ask for though, I will have another search again tonight after work. If treatment is needed though, I suppose it really won't have achieved anything, mind.

Yeah nothing is really achieved treatment wise, apart from knowing earlier if anything will show on NHS scan. I went through babybond and had pelvic investigation scan if that helps at all xx

I think I got the letter a week after the doctor referred me with the appointment date for six weeks later.

It is one of the shorter waits I've had! Other things have taken much longer. We have been under 'consultant care' for 13 months now and have only seen him once. Next app in Feb. They aren't swift and appointments are often full or being changed and put back. We will be most likely be going private if we aren't offered treatment in Feb as we are 'getting on a bit' for a first baby now. I wanted to have the testing done on NHS though as it is very expensive.
