Just resting up at home and thought I'd share a nice positive birth story with you all.
This was my second birth and since my first was 9days overdue, it was a big surprise to go into labour on my due date! I started with the not so regular but stronger than my usual BH contractions at 9am on the 26th and after a low key day of supermarket shopping and a bit of tidying they were slowly getting closer together and stronger. We managed to get our 2yr old to bed and I got a rest and watched some TV before I started getting a contraction every 3-5 min at which point we decided to go in to hospital at 1.30am (MIL stayed to babysit).

The labour ward was very quiet and we got the pool room I wanted (hurray!) and I found out I was 5cm at that point. We had a lovely midwife who was very relaxed and low key who filled the pool for me and set up the G&A that I needed. It was all very relaxing and within about 3h I wanted to push and baby Leo was born just 22min later at 4.52am! 8lb 9oz and no grazes or tears and his cord was left for over 15min while we both recovered. I got my natural 3rd stage too. We got home about 8am that morning, just in time to introduce our toddler to her new little brother.

It really went amazingly well and couldn't have been a better experience (though I think I'll happily wait another couple of years before trying it again!) I feel very lucky and feel it just shows how staying relaxed and the right people supporting you can make a big difference to the experience. X

Thank you everyone :). Just thought I should say that my previous labour also ended in a hospital water birth (instead of a planned home birth) but was much more protracted (16h) and at one point involved me arguing with a doctor over a monitor that wasn't working and telling a couple of people to leave the room (they had about 6 midwives and a consultant arguing over the baby's heart trace *rolls eyes*). I ended up with a small split which needed stitches and was absolutely exhausted when we got home.

This time I was determined to improve things so I stayed at home as long as possible and planned to for a hospital water birth in the first place. So there was no change of plans at the last minute. This really helped me stay relaxed (I hate last minute changes) and I think helped things progress much faster. I also feel I got very lucky with the midwife who was on shift with me. She was a senior midwife, very experienced and calm. She didn't examine me at all in the 3h, just went by my feeling and position otherwise keeping out of the way. She only got involved when things really started happening and kept telling me to listen to my body and follow any urges to push. It was exactly what I needed. So all in all it was a bit of luck with the pool room and the midwife and me having a much more positive attitude towards a hospital birth this time round. :)

sounds wonderful - dream labour :) congrats
