Anyone else feel that breast feeding support is pretty shoddy in the NHS? I'm into day 11 of exclusively feeding my 11 day old first baby.

Thought things were going really well but was struggling with fast flow and lots of very short feedings- 5-7 mins. Despite speaking to 4 different midwives I was assured that short feedings were perfectly normal and not to worry just to carry on feeding on demand. Went along to a breast feeding support group today and saw a lactation consultant there.

She basically advised that whilst this is quite normal, baby needs to be encouraged to feed longer. She has given me a 7 day plan of scheduled 2 hourly feeds and to try and get him to wake up as he still is very sleepy and she thinks he is just snacking and sleeping and that demand feeding is not working as he is just not waking to feed properly......

God it's all so confusing and conflicting and you look to professionals for advice.....why can't people sing from the same hymn sheet?

Or is this welcome to the world of baby??

It's hideous over here! Considering they do promote BFing they have simply not got the resources to back it up.

C is EBF at nearly 6months and I still don't know how I have got to this point.

Glad you have managed to get to a good LC. The MWs, HVs, gps and even infant feeding coordinators simply have not done much. Obviously this is my experience.

If it wasn't for a lovely BFing counsellor from the NCT C would be FF xx

I work for the NHS and I'm suprised how much they push breast feeding yet like you say have little resources and knowledge to support breast feeding. I am hoping to keep in touch with this lactation consultant.

The work that the people do vouluntarily to support breast feeding mums is amazing though, hats off to them as they really do try their best.

Without a doubt the voluntary support workers are the unsung hero' xx

Yep it's crap where I am too. I believe in demand feeding coz like us, they will let you know if they are hungry. Having said that I still don't like to leave her more than 3 hours haha xxx

Both of my girls have been super fast feeders. A feed generally takes 10 minutes.
